Oklahoma State’s offensive line took a major hit this week, and the Cowboys now have to sort through their left tackle options without Jacob Sexton.
Head coach Eric Morris said Tuesday that Sexton suffered a broken leg on the first drive of Saturday’s game against Tulsa and is out for the season. Sexton had already been removed from the depth chart for Saturday’s matchup with Oregon because of the injury.
The play that ended his day was a painful one. Sexton went to the ground after Tulsa safety Ashton Williams rolled over his right leg while Sexton was trying to block upfield for running back Caleb Hawkins. He left the field with his lower right leg in an air cast.
Now Oklahoma State turns to a reshuffled left tackle picture as it gets ready to host Oregon on Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium. The position is listed as an “OR” between Desmond Magiya and Shaun Torgeson, both of whom stepped in after Sexton exited the Tulsa game.
Morris said the Cowboys can’t spend the week dwelling on the loss. The decision at left tackle, he said, will come down to who handles practice the best.
The depth chart saw one more change as true freshman Ja’Qwon Evans was removed. He had been viewed as Sexton’s backup for the opener.
Magiya and Torgeson both bring tackle experience to the table. Magiya played 251 snaps at left tackle in 2025 with North Texas, while Torgeson started at left tackle for Portland State in 2025 and logged nearly 800 snaps.
The Cowboys are also still waiting on Braydon Nelson, Morris’ starting left tackle last year at North Texas. Nelson is working to ramp up his recovery from a knee injury over the next couple of weeks, and Morris said Saturday that he won’t force him back and that he won’t be ready this week.
There’s also the possibility that Sexton’s college career is over. Under the new age-based eligibility rule, players get five years to play five years, and Sexton is already in his fifth collegiate season after using his redshirt. In the past, he might have been able to seek a medical hardship redshirt, but the NCAA is now only granting waivers and redshirts under unique circumstances.
