Oklahoma State will have to move on without its starting left tackle for the rest of the year.
Coach Eric Morris said Tuesday that Jacob Sexton is out for the season with a lower right leg injury. The senior went down on OSU’s first offensive series of the season, and the setback comes with an unfortunate bit of déjà vu: while playing at Oklahoma last year, Sexton also suffered a season-ending injury in the opener.
“Heart goes out to Jacob, a guy who has definitely been our best offensive lineman since we’ve been here,” Morris said Saturday. “Somebody that’s worked so hard this offseason to get himself back into shape. He’s been plagued by injuries his whole entire career.”
With Sexton sidelined, OSU’s depth chart for Saturday’s matchup with No. 2 Oregon lists junior Desmond Magiya or sophomore Shaun Torgeson at left tackle. Against Tulsa, Magiya was the first player to step in at the spot, with Torgeson and senior Ashton Lepo also taking turns there.
Morris said after the Tulsa game that he planned to study the film and evaluate his options along the line.
“I didn’t think we had a great answer on the edge,” Morris said. “(Magiya) got beat a number of times around the edge, got a holding penalty at a crucial time in the game.
So I think Sexton, obviously you lose a really good player at left tackle, that’s not what you want but that’s not an excuse. They took it to us in so many different areas.”
