Oklahoma State's Secondary Just Took A Brutal Hit

OSUs defense takes a significant hit as standout safety Mose Phillips III is sidelined for the season due to a confirmed injury.

STILLWATER - Oklahoma State will be without starting safety Mose Phillips III for the rest of the season, a school official confirmed Wednesday night.

Phillips was on the list of unavailable players released for the Big 12’s upcoming games, and he did not appear on Wednesday’s initial list for Saturday’s 4 p.m. home game against Colorado. OSU coach Eric Morris was asked about Phillips’ status during the conference call Tuesday and said the senior would “be out again this week.”

The injury leaves Oklahoma State with three players at defensive tackle, Landon Dean out, wide receiver Daytoun Sunday questionable and linebacker Gunnar Wilson probable.

Phillips transferred from Missouri and started four consecutive games until suffering an apparent shoulder injury against UNLV on Oct. 4. He was injured in the second quarter after a 26-yard reception midway through the fourth quarter.

Jacemont-sealing fumble recovery of 26 yards against USF midway through the fourth quarter.

Phillips was interviewed in the days leading up to the game against the Mountaineers. He was asked why he chose to transfer to OSU.

“Just getting around this coaching staff. I say it all the time.

This is like the energy about them. It’s a confident energy, but also they’re from anywhere, so it’s even my dad.

He could tell. He played at Tennessee in the Vh’s, so they won a lot of games.

So when we got around them, we kind of just the winners. So when we got around them, we kind of them, we kind of just the winners.”

“It's also just the historic history of being here. Like being able to play in BPB (Boone Pickens Stadium), it's nothing like it, man.

I take pride in it. We all take pride in it.”

“I'm honoring the best every time we step out there.”

Oklahoma State Faces A Protection Test Colorado Could Exploit

Colorado is getting ready for a matchup with Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker, and the Buffaloes defensive front is shaping up as a key part of the plan. Defensive coordinator Chris Marve singled out Dylan Manuel and Santana Hopper for the way they have played up front, crediting them for the energy and disruption they have brought to the line.

For Colorado, the assignment is clear: make Mestemaker uncomfortable and force the Cowboys to work harder for everything through the air. Manuel and Hopper are expected to be central to that effort, especially if they can keep collapsing the pocket and make Oklahoma States passing game play on a shorter leash. [Read more 🡒]

BYU Just Added A New Threat To Its Big 12 Push

The Big 12 has reached its midpoint with three teams still undefeated in league and overall play, and all three sit in the AP Top 10, a sign of how quickly the race has tightened at the top. BYU added another rsum win by beating Notre Dame even while dealing with injuries, Houston kept showing real offensive punch behind Conner Weigman, and Texas Tech continued to look more balanced after a slow start.

For Oklahoma State, though, the weekend was another reminder of how hard it has been to find answers on defense. The Cowboys were on the wrong end of a game in which Houston moved the ball with ease, while other league problems kept stacking up around them, from Baylors offensive struggles to Arizona States quarterback change during the game. With the conference season still young enough for swings in the standings, Oklahoma States issues in the back end are becoming the kind of problem that can define the rest of the run. [Read more 🡒]

Colorado Heads Into Oklahoma State With A Growing Injury Problem

Colorados injury report keeps getting longer at an inconvenient time, with the Buffaloes heading into Week 8 against Oklahoma State already dealing with a depleted roster. Micah Welch and Jayven Richardson were added to the out list after getting hurt against Utah, and Welchs situation is still unclear enough to leave the staff waiting on a better read. Coach Deion Sanders has also had to manage the fallout from several other health issues, making the weeks buildup more about availability than anything schematic.

Danny Scuderos status is the most concerning subplot as Colorado sorts through its offensive options, while Lamont Lester has been limited enough to keep his role in question. For a team trying to stabilize itself in the middle of the season, the challenge is not just who can suit up Saturday, but how many pieces are left intact after a string of injuries that has started to reshape the depth chart.
