Oklahoma’s upset of No. 1 Texas didn’t buy the Sooners a spot in The Associated Press Top 25. It did, however, leave the poll with a fresh jolt at the top.
Georgia jumped to No. 1 on Sunday after its 20-17 win at Alabama, while Oklahoma remained unranked despite its 27-24 Red River Rivalry victory at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The Sooners (3-2) picked up 44 votes, enough to stay on the outside looking in.
That win over Texas came with all the high-leverage moments Oklahoma needed: Peyton Bowen’s 42-yard interception return for a touchdown and Tate Sandell’s 47-yard field goal to finish it off. The Sooners erased a 17-7 halftime deficit to hand the Longhorns their first loss of the season.
Texas (4-1) slid six places to No. 7, matching its biggest drop from No. 1 over the last two seasons.
Oklahoma State held its ground at No. 18 after a 42-28 win over UCF in Stillwater. The Cowboys have won four straight and now head to No.
20 Houston on Oct. 17 for a 6:30 p.m. CT kickoff.
It will be the first meeting between the programs as ranked teams.
The Sooners also have a ranked opponent coming to Norman next. No.
15 Kentucky visits Saturday for a 6:30 p.m. CT kickoff after climbing 11 spots off its 35-34 overtime win over LSU.
Georgia’s move to the top came after it beat Alabama on the road, its first win in Tuscaloosa since 2014. The Bulldogs received 66 first-place votes from the 70-member media panel and returned to No. 1 for the first time since Sept. 8, 2024.
Notre Dame rose to No. 2 after a 58-7 rout of Stanford, setting up this week’s top-10 showdown at BYU. The Fighting Irish earned one first-place vote and are at their highest spot since finishing the 2024 season at No. 2.
Miami is No. 3 and got two first-place votes, followed by Ohio State and Indiana. The Hoosiers picked up the remaining first-place vote after their narrow win at Nebraska and moved up two spots.
Alabama stayed at No. 6, with Texas, BYU, Mississippi and Texas Tech filling out the rest of the top 10.
Oregon’s fall out of the poll was one of the biggest shifts of the week. The Ducks, who entered the season at No. 2, lost 17-15 at home to UCLA and dropped to 3-2. It was the first time Oregon had been unranked since the 2022 opener, when it fell from No. 11 to outside the poll after a 49-3 loss to Georgia.
UCLA was one of the week’s biggest risers, climbing nine spots to No. 12.
Kentucky matched that kind of climb, jumping from unranked to No. 15.
LSU fell from No. 10 to No. 22 after its overtime loss to Kentucky, while Florida tumbled from No. 8 to No. 16 to out of the rankings after a 38-19 home loss to South Carolina. Pittsburgh also fell out after managing just one touchdown on eight second-half possessions in a 21-17 home loss to North Carolina.
Three new teams entered the poll: No. 21 Wake Forest, No.
25 Northwestern and Kentucky. Wake Forest is 5-1 and ranked for the first time since late October 2022, while Northwestern earned its first ranking under fourth-year coach David Braun at 4-1.
Kentucky is back after dropping out last week and is at its highest spot since early October 2022.
The poll also showed the SEC with nine ranked teams, led by Georgia at No. 1 and followed by Alabama, Texas, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi State and LSU. The Big Ten placed six teams in the rankings, while the Big 12 had five, the ACC three, Pac-12 member Boise State one and independent Notre Dame one.
This weekend’s ranked-vs.-ranked slate is loaded, starting with No. 4 Ohio State at No.
5 Indiana. It’s Ohio State’s second top-five matchup of the season, and the teams last met in the 2025 Big Ten championship game, when Indiana won 13-10 with the Hoosiers at No. 2 and the Buckeyes at No.
No. 2 Notre Dame visits No.
8 BYU in the first-ever top-10 game at LaVell Edwards Stadium. BYU won the last time Notre Dame came to town in 2004.
No. 16 Mississippi State and No. 22 LSU meet as ranked opponents for the first time since 2018.
At No. 6 Alabama and No. 14 Tennessee, the Volunteers face a major quarterback question, and the Crimson Tide have lost their last two trips to Knoxville.
No. 13 Missouri’s trip to No. 9 Mississippi comes with its own layer of intrigue for QB Austin Simmons, who began last season as Ole Miss’ starter, got hurt, recovered and stayed on the bench behind Trinidad Chambliss.

Houston Just Showed How Dangerous This Big 12 Run Could Get
Week 6 of the 2026 Big 12 season started to sort out the leagues upper tier, and Oklahoma State was right in the middle of it. BYU, Arizona, Houston and Utah all picked up wins as the conference race began to narrow, while the Cowboys added another important result of their own by getting past UCF. The bigger picture matters here: the teams separating from the pack are starting to look less like a short-term hot streak and more like the early shape of the championship chase.
Oklahoma States comeback fit the tone of a weekend when margin for error was shrinking across the league. Houstons win over Kansas State only sharpened the sense that the Big 12 race could get crowded in a hurry, with every contender being asked to answer the same question week after week: are they good enough to keep pace when the conference starts turning on a single play? The Cowboys handled their side of that test, and now the pressure only increases as the race tightens. [Read more 🡒]
Mike Gundy Just Reminded Oklahoma State Why His Exit Still Hurts
Mike Gundy popped up on TNTs Big 12 pregame show and, for Oklahoma State fans, it was a reminder of just how much of his life was tied to Stillwater. He went from being a player there to spending more than two decades as the Cowboys head coach, building a rsum that included a Big 12 Championship and a long stretch of winning seasons.
Now part of college football coverage for TNT, Gundy was looking back on an era that defined him as much as it did the program. The public separation may be new, but the connection clearly is not, and for Oklahoma State, hearing him reflect on that long run only underscores how much history left the building when he did. Oklahoma State Has Real Momentum After Its Cleanest Win Yet
Oklahoma States four-game winning streak now comes with a performance that looked a lot closer to a complete team effort. The Cowboys handled UCF 42-28, and the biggest sign of progress came from the passing game, where Drew Mestemaker stayed in rhythm and moved the offense efficiently while the rest of the roster chipped in across the board.
There were still early hiccups, but the Cowboys never let them derail the afternoon, which has become a meaningful sign for a team trying to build something sturdier as the season goes on. Eric Morris and several players pointed to individual and unit-level growth after the win, and the next question is whether Oklahoma State can keep that same balance as the schedule keeps tightening.
