Oklahoma State is walking into Houston with a number next to its name now.
After beating UCF 42-28, the Cowboys climbed into the USA Today US LBM Top 25 at No. 20 and will take that ranking into Saturday night’s Big 12 matchup at Houston. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m., with the game on Fox.
That makes this a different kind of road trip for Oklahoma State. The Cowboys are back in the Top 25 for a second straight week, but this will be their first game as a ranked team against a ranked opponent this season.
Houston, meanwhile, is trying to turn TDECU Stadium into a real home-field edge for the visit. Cougars coach Willie Fritz has already pushed fans to fill the 40,000-seat building after Houston drew awkward attention when its stands were sparse for an 11 a.m. game against UCF.
The Cowboys’ rise in the coaches poll has been gradual. They were unranked entering the UCF game, but their support had grown every week since collecting 16 votes after the Oregon win in Week 2. The latest jump placed them at No. 20 in the coaches-voted Top 25, a poll that includes Oklahoma State coach Eric Morris.
The AP Top 25 update was still pending at the time of this report.
Against UCF, the offense did plenty to justify the climb. Quarterback Drew Mestemaker threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns in his first game of the season without a turnover.
Caleb Hawkins shook off an early fumble and finished with 83 rushing yards while adding two catches for 32 yards. Justin Bowick came just short of another 100-yard receiving day, hauling in six passes for 98 yards and a touchdown, and Wyatt Young also found the end zone.
Oklahoma State’s defense was shaky early, especially in the tackling department, but settled in as the game went on. The unit gave up 375 total yards, yet held UCF to seven points in the second half after the teams were tied 21-21 at the break.
The defining defensive snap came in the fourth quarter, when safety Evan Jackson scooped up a fumble and took it back for a touchdown to put Oklahoma State ahead 35-21 and effectively close the door. Linebackers Ethan Wesloski and Tate Romney were all over the field, combining for 31 tackles. Romney also finished with two tackles for loss.

Oklahoma State Homecoming Clash With Colorado Carries One Frustrating Unknown
Oklahoma State already knows one of its biggest October stages in 2026, with the Big 12 locking in the Cowboys Top 25 meeting with Houston for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff on Fox. Around that, the league has begun to piece together Week 8, and the conference slate already carries the feel of a busy one for teams trying to sort out fall visibility, television windows and game-day rhythms.
What remains hanging over Stillwater is the homecoming date with Colorado, a matchup that has enough profile to draw attention but not enough certainty yet to settle the calendar. Seven Big 12 games in that week are sitting on six-day holds and will be finalized Sunday, leaving Oklahoma State and its fans waiting a little longer for the exact time and network that will frame the Cowboys visit from the Buffaloes. Steve Lutz Saw The Same Oklahoma State Problem He Hates
The first exhibition gave Steve Lutz a clear look at what still needs cleaning up before Oklahoma State settles into the season. The Cowboys fell 99-89 to New Mexico, and the issues were as much about how they defended as anything else, with Lutz left frustrated by the teams foul trouble and the way the Lobos kept getting easy chances at the line.
Oklahoma State did have some scoring balance, putting five players in double figures and getting 18 points from freshman Anthony Felesi. But New Mexicos perimeter shooting and scoring punch kept the Cowboys chasing the game, and Lutz was left with the kind of defensive breakdowns he clearly does not want to see carry over into the real thing. Caleb Hawkins Could Help Oklahoma State Land Another Playmaker
Caleb Hawkins has already made himself one of Oklahoma States most important offensive additions this season, giving the Cowboys a homegrown presence after transferring from North Texas. Back near his hometown and high school roots, Hawkins has become the teams leading rusher in both yards and touchdowns, a steady sign that the move has worked out for player and program alike.
Now theres a familiar name drawing interest on the recruiting side. Oklahoma State has shown attention to a versatile uncommitted athlete with ties to Hawkins, and the staffs evaluation has only added another layer to the connection. For a Cowboys offense looking to keep adding playmakers, that family link could make this one worth watching a little longer. [Read more 🡒]
