As Oklahoma State wraps up its season with another NIT appearance under Coach Steve Lutz, the focus now shifts to the NCAA Transfer Portal and shaping the 2026-27 roster. With some key players out of eligibility, the Cowboys are at a crossroads, deciding who will return and who will step in to fill the gaps.
Reflecting on the recent loss to Wichita State, Lutz emphasized the need for introspection and strategic planning. "We gotta look in the mirror," he said.
"We need to figure out who wants to return, who we want to return, and then build a team that can get us to the NCAA Tournament. It's about playing the right way-being physical, tough, defending, and rebounding every night.
That's our mission moving forward."
The NCAA transfer portal opens on April 7, with players able to enter until April 21. This period is crucial for teams like Oklahoma State as they seek to bolster their lineup.
Lutz acknowledges the financial constraints compared to other Big 12 programs but remains undeterred. "We're not gonna have the same money that some of the other Big 12 programs are gonna have, and that's not an excuse - that's the facts," Lutz stated.
"We need to spend wisely, get the right players, and do more with less. That's the Cowboy Code.
We're not gonna complain; we're gonna do our jobs. The next week to 10 days will be pivotal."
As the Cowboys navigate these challenges, fans can expect a strategic approach rooted in resilience and determination, embodying the spirit of Oklahoma State basketball.
