No. 18 Oklahoma State had the comeback it wanted, just not the finish.
The Cowboys erased an 11-point halftime deficit Saturday night and kept pushing all the way to the end, but No. 20 Houston answered every surge and escaped TDECU Stadium with a 35-32 win in a Top 20 matchup.
Drew Mestemaker kept Oklahoma State alive with a huge passing night, going 22 of 34 for 365 yards and three touchdowns. Oklahoma State put up 29 points after halftime, but the Cowboys could never quite get over the top.
Houston’s Conner Weigman was just as dangerous, throwing for 343 yards and five touchdowns as the Cougars moved to 6-1. Oklahoma State dropped to 4-2.
The Cowboys actually set the tone early. On Houston’s opening possession, Lyrik Fields picked off Weigman, and Oklahoma State turned that into the first points of the night with a 23-yard field goal from Sam Keltner. But Houston quickly settled in, piecing together a 75-yard drive that ended with Weigman’s 2-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Overmyer.
Oklahoma State had a shot to swing the game back in its favor late in the first quarter after Mestemaker hit Wyatt Young for 54 yards. The Cowboys got all the way to Houston’s 2-yard line, only to come away empty after turning the ball over on downs early in the second quarter. That missed chance loomed large.
Soon after, Houston struck again. The Cougars intercepted Mestemaker and took over at the Oklahoma State 25, then Weigman found Amare Thomas on a 7-yard scoring pass to make it 14-3 at halftime.
The Cowboys came out firing after the break. Their opening drive of the second half covered 75 yards and ended with Ayo Adeyi’s 13-yard touchdown run, trimming the deficit to 14-10. Houston punched right back, though, as Weigman hit Thomas for 51 yards before connecting with Trent Walker on a 2-yard touchdown to push the margin back to 21-10.
Oklahoma State refused to go away. Mestemaker guided a 90-yard drive and finished it with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Young. But Houston answered again, this time with Weigman finding Thomas for a 21-yard score to give the Cougars a 28-17 lead late in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter turned into a track meet. After a Mestemaker fumble killed one possession, Oklahoma State got the ball back and needed one snap to make noise. Mestemaker hit Caleb Hawkins for a 66-yard touchdown, and the Cowboys’ two-point conversion pulled them within 28-25 with 11:57 left.
Houston responded with another big strike, as Weigman connected with Koby Young for a 48-yard touchdown to make it 35-25 with 9:48 remaining.
Still, Oklahoma State had one more rally left. The Cowboys marched 88 yards in 10 plays, and Mestemaker found Justin Bowick for an 8-yard touchdown with 4:54 remaining. That cut the gap to 35-32 and set up a tense finish.
But Houston controlled the final stretch. The Cougars kept the ball on the next possession and converted a third down with an 18-yard completion from Weigman to Walker, helping them bleed the clock and finish off the victory.
Hawkins was a major weapon for Oklahoma State, catching seven passes for 125 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 68 yards on 17 carries. Young added five catches for 99 yards and a score, and Miles Coleman had three receptions for 77 yards.
The Cowboys finished with 499 total yards, including 365 through the air and 134 on the ground.
Houston ended with 505 yards. Weigman completed 24 of 33 passes, with Thomas leading the way on seven catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Walker also had seven receptions for 104 yards and a score.

Oklahoma State Let A Winnable Game Slip Away On Defense
Oklahoma States four-game winning streak ended in a frustrating 35-32 loss to Houston, and the biggest issue was one the Cowboys couldnt quite get off the field. The defense struggled with time of possession and missed tackles, letting Houston stay on schedule and extend drives in a game that was there to be taken.
The Cowboys did get a second-half spark from Drew Mestemaker, who passed for 365 yards, and the offense showed enough life to make it a true late-game battle. But Oklahoma State never fully cashed in on its chances, and one critical red-zone trip helped leave the result hanging just out of reach. [Read more 🡒]
Oklahoma State Fans May See The Playoff Very Differently Soon
ESPNs report of an in-principle television deal for a 24-team College Football Playoff has a way of changing how seasons get judged, especially for programs outside the very top tier. For Oklahoma State, the discussion matters because the Cowboys have never reached the current four-team field, even in years when they were squarely in the mix for a major postseason run.
Under the expanded setup, the path to the playoff would look much different for teams like Oklahoma State, with far more room for a strong season to still turn into a national title chase. The format is aimed at beginning in 2027 if the remaining approvals come through, and its exactly the kind of shift that could make the postseason feel a lot more reachable in Stillwater. Houston Just Made A Big 12 Statement Fans Can't Ignore
Oklahoma State walked out of TDECU Stadium with a tough Big 12 loss after Houston held on for a 35-32 win in a game that turned into a showcase for the Cougars offense. The Cowboys still moved the ball well enough to pile up 499 total yards, but Houston matched the pace and then some, improving to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play while keeping its place in the league conversation.
The difference was Conner Weigman, who carved up Oklahoma State throughout the afternoon and gave Houston the edge it needed when the game tightened late. The Cowboys had chances to stay in it, but Houston found the explosive plays it needed in the fourth quarter and did just enough to finish off a statement win that could matter again when the Big 12 picture gets clearer.
