Oklahoma State Legend Just Weighed In On Chad Weibergs Uncertain Future

Amidst swirling speculation over his future, Oklahoma State's athletic director Chad Weiberg receives a powerful endorsement from legendary running back Thurman Thomas.

An Oklahoma State legend has entered the conversation around athletic director Chad Weiberg.

During the Cowboys’ football bye week, Weiberg’s future became a hot topic after the Tulsa World’s Berry Tramel wrote earlier this week about the possibility of OSU administration making a change. That report sparked plenty of reaction, from social media chatter to fan discussion and even an effort to contact the school’s leadership.

One post that got attention came from Cowboys fan @JoeskiPoke, who wrote, “Everyone needs to write or call the board of regents and demand Chad stays!”

Carson Cunningham, who hosts the Pistol Guys podcast, reposted that message and added, “Let your voice be heard!”

Among the replies was Thurman Thomas, the former Oklahoma State star and Pro Football Hall of Famer, who indicated he would be reaching out as well.

Weiberg is an OSU alum who began working in administration in 1994 in corporate sales and donor relations. He later spent time at Kansas State from 2004-15 and Texas Tech from 2015-17 before returning to Stillwater in 2017 as deputy athletic director. He was promoted to athletic director in 2021.

Thomas’ support carries real weight. He is one of the most decorated players in Oklahoma State history and built a Hall of Fame career that stretched into the NFL. He was inducted into both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

At Oklahoma State, Thomas was a consensus all-American once and a first-team All-American another time. He also earned All-Big Eight Offensive Player of the Year honors twice and was first team All-Big Eight three times. He finished his college career with 4,595 rushing yards and 78 touchdowns on 898 carries, and his No. 34 has been retired by OSU.

In the NFL, Thomas spent all but one season of a 13-year career with the Buffalo Bills. He played in four Super Bowls, rushed for 12,074 yards and 65 touchdowns, and caught 472 passes for 4,458 yards and 23 touchdowns. He was the league’s Most Valuable Player in 1991 and earned first-team All-Pro honors twice.

Drew Mestemakers Rise Is Suddenly A Huge Oklahoma State Question

Drew Mestemakers rise has quickly turned into one of the more interesting offseason storylines around Oklahoma State, and it has everything to do with how much projection is now attached to a player with limited power conference experience. ESPN already has Mestemaker sitting atop its list of 2027 NFL Draft quarterback prospects, a striking sign of how evaluators view his talent and upside. For the Cowboys, it is another reminder that the most important player on the roster may also be the one most difficult to keep in Stillwater.

Head coach Eric Morris has made it clear he sees a future pro in Mestemaker and expects that day to come eventually, which only adds urgency to the programs long-range planning. The real question for Oklahoma State is timing, since Mestemaker could be weighing whether to make the jump in 2027 or stay put and push things back a year, and the staff is already working the recruiting trail and developing other quarterbacks with both outcomes in mind. Oklahoma States Bye Week Put One Ranking Question Front And Center

A week off can sharpen a teams edge, but it also can sharpen the questions around it, and Oklahoma State has one sitting right there after its 41-24 win over West Virginia. The Cowboys are still carrying the look of a team that can score with just about anybody, sitting second nationally in total offense, and the defense added enough encouraging moments last time out with an interception, four sacks and eight tackles for loss.

The bigger issue is how those ingredients are being viewed beyond Stillwater, where the AP Top 25 has the Cowboys at No. 19 after the win. The coaches saw them a little differently, though, and the gap between those rankings says plenty about where Oklahoma State stands heading into the bye, with the team still trying to turn strong production into something that holds up in every poll and every week. Oklahoma State's Oregon Story Suddenly Has Much Bigger Stakes

Oregons rise in the AP Top 25 has given Oklahoma States early-season connection to the Ducks a much bigger feel than it had a few weeks ago. The Ducks checked in at No. 13 and, in On3s latest playoff projection, they are still very much in the mix for a spot in the expanded College Football Playoff as they head into a demanding stretch that includes UCLA and Nebraska, plus a looming Oct. 31 meeting with Northwestern.

The quarterback situation only adds another layer, with Dante Moore expected back after a concussion as Oregon tries to keep its playoff path clean. For Oklahoma State, the interest is obvious because the Ducks are no longer just a nonconference opponent on the schedule, but a team with real postseason implications tied to its name, its ranking and the way the rest of the Big Ten race unfolds.
