Oklahoma State Landed South Carolina But Cowgirls Fans Face One Catch

Despite the excitement surrounding a high-stakes clash with South Carolina, logistical and strategic decisions mean Oklahoma State fans will need to travel to see the return game.

Oklahoma State wanted a true home-and-home with South Carolina. It’s not going to get one.

The Cowgirls’ two-game agreement with the Gamecocks begins Dec. 6 in Columbia, S.C., and that opener already has a big-time spotlight: ABC at 3 p.m. That part makes sense.

South Carolina, under Dawn Staley, has become one of the sport’s heavyweights, with three national championships and appearances in each of the last six Final Fours. Oklahoma State is trying to climb into that tier, and Jacie Hoyt made clear she wanted the challenge for her team in non-conference play.

The wrinkle comes with the return trip. Even though game contracts of this type are typically built as home-and-homes, Hoyt said during preseason media day that the second meeting will not be on campus in Stillwater. Instead, it will likely land in either Tulsa or Oklahoma City.

“We really wanted South Carolina to come as a true home-and-home for us,” she said. “That was just not something they felt comfortable with for whatever reason. I don't know because honestly, and I haven't been in those conversations.”

Hoyt said she has not talked with anyone on South Carolina’s coaching staff, adding that third-party people are now helping arrange those kinds of games.

The arena size difference doesn’t seem to explain the decision. South Carolina plays at Colonial Life Arena, which seats 18,000 for basketball and is the largest arena in the state.

Oklahoma State’s Gallagher-Iba Arena holds 13,611. Still, attendance at a neutral site wouldn’t be an issue either way.

South Carolina’s 2024 neutral-site game against TCU in Fort Worth drew 8,004 at Dickies Arena, a matchup that featured star power on both sides, including TCU’s Hailey Van Lith and South Carolina’s Milaysia Fulwiley. In that game, South Carolina’s Ashlyn Watkins dunked for the third time in her collegiate career.

Oklahoma State also has another major neutral-site game on the schedule: Bedlam against Oklahoma on Dec. 12 in Oklahoma City at the Paycom Center, which seats 18,203 for basketball. If the South Carolina return game ends up in Tulsa, it would likely be at the BOK Center, which holds 17,839 for basketball.

Hoyt said she would have preferred the game in Stillwater, but she sounds confident the crowd will come either way.

“I wish it was here on our home floor, to be able to play that game in front of our fans,” she said. “But I'm also really optimistic that our fans will travel to Tulsa or Oklahoma City or wherever that may be.”

Oklahoma States Red Zone Problem Is Forcing Eric Morris To Adjust

Oklahoma States offense has been doing enough to move the ball, but the finish has been a different story. Eric Morris has already had to tweak his approach near the goal line after the Cowboys came away empty too often in recent games, and that has pushed the staff into a round of self-scouting as it looks for better ways to turn promising drives into touchdowns.

Drew Mestemakers passing has been cleaner in the red area, though it still has not become the reliable answer the Cowboys need. So Morris is weighing a more measured approach, with the kind of playcalling and personnel usage that can help Oklahoma State protect possessions and avoid settling for too many uneasy decisions once the field shrinks. Mike Gundys First Post Oklahoma State Move Will Surprise Cowboys Fans

Mike Gundys first move after Oklahoma State is heading to the broadcast booth, but only briefly. The former Cowboys head coach is set to make his television debut as a guest analyst on TNTs college football coverage this weekend, a notable turn for a coach who spent years as one of the most visible figures in the sport.

For Oklahoma State fans, the surprise is less that Gundy is showing up on TV than how selective hes been about it. He has limited his media schedule to spend more time with his family, and he already turned down other opportunities from ESPN and FOX Sports this season, making this TNT stint his only scheduled analyst appearance for now. Memphis Already Has A New Offensive Standard Under Kevin Decker

One of the more notable early-season coordinator turnarounds has come from Kevin Decker at Memphis, where the offense already looks different enough to qualify as a new standard. Through Week 5 of the 2026 season, the Tigers have been part of a broader national conversation about assistants who are reshaping their teams in a hurry, with the rankings weighing results, opponent quality and how much each coach has changed an inherited unit. Deckers work has stood out in that group, and Memphis has given him a platform to show it.

For Oklahoma State fans, the name in that same conversation is Skyler Cassity, whose defense has also been part of the Week 5 coordinator stock report. The Cowboys have seen enough to believe the unit is moving in the right direction, but the bigger picture still leaves some room for proof, especially with efficiency and schedule context still part of the evaluation. In other words, there is real progress here, but the full resume is still being written. [Read more 🡒]
