Kansas State will look different in 2026, but the name at the center of the program is one Oklahoma State knows well.
Collin Klein is back in Manhattan as the Wildcats’ head coach, a familiar figure for Cowboys fans after his decorated run at quarterback for Kansas State. Klein was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2012, then moved into coaching after his playing career ended in the CFL in 2014.
He spent nearly a decade on the Kansas State staff, with a one-year stop at Northern Iowa as quarterbacks coach mixed in, before rising to offensive coordinator under Chris Klieman. More recently, he spent two seasons as offensive coordinator at Texas A&M under Mike Elko and helped the Aggies reach the College Football Playoff last year.
Now he returns with a clear mission: helping Avery Johnson become one of the best quarterbacks in the country.
Oklahoma State, meanwhile, is trying to stop a skid that has dragged on far too long. Eric Morris is the new head coach in Stillwater, where the Cowboys have not won a Big 12 game since 2023 and have managed just four wins over the last two seasons. The next meeting with Kansas State is set for Nov. 7 in Manhattan.
The series history still tilts Oklahoma State’s way, with the Cowboys holding a 43-26 edge overall and a 19-16 mark on the road.
The last time these teams met came on Nov. 15, and it fit neatly into the bigger picture for both programs. Kansas State was fighting to stay bowl eligible, while Oklahoma State was still searching for a way to end its long conference drought. It also landed near the end of Chris Klieman’s run in Manhattan, with his retirement coming after the season and opening the door for Klein.
For a stretch, Oklahoma State had the upper hand, even if the offense settled for too many field goals. Logan Ward drilled a pair of 47-yard kicks to put the Cowboys up 6-0 early in the second quarter. Kansas State answered with one play that flipped the game.
With 7:07 left in the second quarter, Avery Johnson hit Jayce Brown on a 34-yard touchdown pass, and the Wildcats moved in front 7-6. That score held into halftime.
Oklahoma State stayed within reach, but it never found the end zone again. Kansas State added a Joe Jackson touchdown run in the fourth quarter to close it out 14-6, a game decided by the Wildcats’ defense.
Zane Flores threw for 233 yards for Oklahoma State but also had two interceptions. Rodney Fields Jr. ran for 51 yards, and Terrill Davis led the Cowboys’ receivers with four catches for 55 yards.
For Kansas State, Johnson finished with 171 passing yards, a touchdown and an interception. Jackson added 69 rushing yards, while Brown caught three passes for 82 yards.

Kansas State Could Again Be Oklahoma States Season Breaking Point
Kansas State has had a way of showing up in the middle of Oklahoma States season story, and the latest chapter is shaping up to matter again. The Cowboys and Wildcats have been tied together in recent years by more than just conference familiarity, with the result in their matchup often reflecting where Oklahoma State ends up when the dust settles.
Now the next meeting lands in November, when both teams could still have plenty at stake. Bowl eligibility is part of the equation, and if the season breaks the right way for both sides, Big 12 championship positioning could be in play too, which only adds to the sense that this one may carry more weight than a typical late-fall conference game.
