STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State left its postgame discussion with plenty to like, and head coach cited the defense, the depth chart and the chance to get younger players real snaps after the win over Murray State.
“I think the execution was good for most of the first half… The defense was phenomenal pretty much the entire game… We got a little sloppy at the end offensively… I thought the coaches did a nice job of resetting them at halftime, and it's such a process of teaching these guys how to win… We got a lot of kids action tonight, with a lot of guys getting game reps… Which will be huge for us to see how they performed and I thought that was good.”
He said the game gave Oklahoma State a valuable look at some of the newer faces, including William Mason and safety Markeith Williams.
“I thought William Mason did a phenomenal job when he came in… I thought safety (Markeith) Williams came in and showed a lot of tenacity and coming downhill, stopping some stuff… So it will be really great to go back and grade this, and it was good to get a bunch of people involved in it and just knowing that next week we start Big 12 play, where the stakes are obviously a lot higher… The first time we get on a plane and fly across the country and so we have to put this one behind us and be able to correct some of the things.”
Freshman quarterback Broderick Vehrs also drew praise for how he handled the offense.
“He's been great in practice, and he's gotten so much better… He's getting a ton of reps and so I had a ton of confidence in him going out there and just executing the offense… Obviously, he didn't open it up and we wanted to take some time off at that time and run the football, but he did a really nice job… He was cool, calm and collected on the sideline, and he has such a great personality, he's really good in the huddle… He's got a really strong arm, and I think he was able to showcase that a couple of times.”
Wide receiver Justin Bowick was another bright spot, and the head coach pointed to the way he prepares.
“He practices like a professional… He takes care of his body… He's the first one here, last one to leave… Always in the training room… The way he prepares is phenomenal… I think he's having fun playing in a wide-open offense, something where he's getting targets and I thought he did a phenomenal job today.”
Bowick, who teamed with quarterback Drew Mestemaker, said the connection has been building since spring.
“You can't ask for a better quarterback than Drew (Mestemaker). Since I got here in the spring, we've been working on the types of throws and catches that we made today.”
He also said he expects a loud atmosphere next week at West Virginia.
“I've heard that stadium gets rocking. We'll be prepared for that. Some Big Ten games I had last year were rocking, but I've heard some Big 12 stadiums really get loud.”
After reaching 100 yards again, Bowick said the milestone meant plenty to him.
“It feels like forever ago. It really does. That's why I was super happy and proud to get a 100-yard game again.”
And when asked about his work in the backfield, he pointed to the team’s approach.
“It's amazing because Coach Morris preached on playing fast. So when I saw a play there, it was a no-brainer to go and make those plays.”
