Oklahoma State’s depth chart for Saturday’s matchup with No. 2 Oregon doesn’t hide much. The Cowboys are still sorting through a few spots, and the biggest clues are written right into the “ORs.”
The clearest change comes at left tackle, where Jacob Sexton’s season-ending lower leg injury has forced Oklahoma State to go with either Desmond Magiya or Shaun Torgeson. Both are still listed elsewhere, too: Magiya as an “OR” at left guard and Torgeson as an “OR” at right tackle.
Head coach Eric Morris said Tuesday that the best practice week will win out, and this one has the feel of a straight hot-hand decision. Magiya already knows Morris’ offense from North Texas and logged more than 200 snaps at left tackle last season, while Torgeson was one of the final transfer additions and has apparently impressed Morris with how quickly he has picked up the scheme.
The backfield picture is just as unsettled behind Caleb Hawkins. Tre Page II is listed as the backup again, but Morris made it plain that nothing is locked in.
“Completely open right now,” Morris said. “So may the best man win.”
Page and Ayo Adeyi split work behind Hawkins against Tulsa, with Page carrying seven times for 19 yards and Adeyi getting six carries for 24 years. Page also had the costly fumble that gave up a possession.
Adeyi’s case is easy enough to understand: he rushed for more than 1,000 yards for Morris at UNT in 2023. Page’s case is that he played at Tarleton State last year and would have gone over 1,000 or more years if not for a mid-season injury.
That battle could flip fast.
The offensive line shuffle is part of a broader picture across the roster. Oklahoma State still has plenty of “OR”s on the chart, and the Cowboys may need to lean on them again against Oregon.
Morris said the team played more than 60 players last Saturday, and he didn’t sound eager to shrink that number. The issue, in his view, isn’t just the weather.
“Were we in shape?” Morris said.
“I didn't think that we were in shape good enough to play in it [the heat]. Just going back and watching [the film] and seeing our body language on the sideline in the fourth quarter and people throwing up.”
On defense, the line picture from Week 1 mostly held. Jaleel Johnson, James Williams and Jerry Lawson started where many expected them to, while Braylon Rigsby was the surprise at defensive tackle.
He was listed as an “OR” with Iman Oates, who still got on the field and, by the end of the game, had more snaps than Rigsby - 27 to 11, according to Pro Football Focus. Morris didn’t spell out why, but the usage suggests Oklahoma State may have opened with one plan and then shifted as the game unfolded.
At linebacker, nothing changed on paper. Ethan Wesloski, Tate Romney and Isaiah Chisom remain the three names listed in the Cowboys’ 4-2-5 setup.
In practice, though, Wesloski and Romney played far more than Chisom, who logged 31 snaps. That doesn’t appear to be changing right now, even if Chisom’s PFF grade was 10 points higher than Romney’s and showed well in pass coverage.
Wesloski looks settled at the SAM spot, while Romney and Chisom are the two names to watch for the job opposite him as the season moves on.
All of it lands with a bigger backdrop on Saturday: Oklahoma State, 0-1, hosting a Big Ten opponent for the first time, with Oregon coming in at 1-0. The Cowboys are trying to keep a streak of 30 straight home openers alive, while the Ducks arrive after last year’s 69-3 win in Eugene.
Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CT at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater.
