Oklahoma State’s defense is heading into Saturday with a clear name at the top of the scouting report: Aiden Flora.
That’s not the usual assignment for a defense, but Iowa State’s third-year running back has turned himself into exactly the kind of player who can force that kind of attention. Listed as a running back, Flora has become much more than that under first-year head coach Jimmy Rogers. He runs it, catches it, throws it and even handles punt returns.
For Cowboys head coach Eric Morris, the film made the point fast.
“He’s a phenomenal football player,” Morris said. “You can just tell his toughness.
They trust him in so many different ways. They pitch it to him.
He throws it. He runs it.
He’s the punt returner. He just has so many roles on that team.
He was a midseason all-American for a reason.”
Flora’s rise has been a direct result of opportunity. He logged just 15 carries across his first two seasons with the Cyclones, but after Matt Campbell took the Penn State job and much of the roster followed him, Flora stayed put and stepped into a far bigger role. Rogers has leaned on him heavily, and Iowa State has built a big part of its offense around what he can do.
The breakout game that really put his versatility on display came Oct. 3 against West Virginia. Flora ripped off 212 rushing yards and three touchdowns while also throwing two touchdown passes in a 45-42 win.
In the process, he became the first Big 12 running back to throw and rush for multiple touchdowns in the same game. He was the second Big 12 player in history to pull it off, joining Texas quarterback Vince Young.
The numbers behind his season explain why defenses have to account for him on every snap. Flora has 716 rushing yards and six touchdowns, averaging seven yards per carry.
He’s added 13 catches for 80 yards, seven punt returns for 125 yards and a touchdown, and he’s 2-for-2 passing for 48 yards and two scores. At 6-0 and 195 pounds, he’s built to take contact inside but still has the burst to turn space into damage.
Morris compared him to another versatile Big 12 back who made his own mark in the conference not long ago.
“I think he’s one of those guys, kind of the heartbeat of the team,” Morris said. “You know, somebody that has the attitude of a [Cam] Skateboo or somebody like that, who just brings so much toughness with him.”
That creates a major challenge for Oklahoma State, which is allowing 137.6 rushing yards per game, good for No. 65 nationally. Flora also sits at the center of an Iowa State offense that has been lethal in the red zone. The Cyclones are perfect at 100% inside the 20, and Flora is a big reason why.
The Cowboys, though, bring a stronger red zone defense to the table. They are tied for No. 23 nationally at 76.2%.
How well Oklahoma State handles Flora’s all-purpose impact could decide whether the Cowboys can stack another win after beating Colorado on Saturday.

Oklahoma State's Recruiting Surge Just Picked Up Another Intriguing Sign
Stillwater linebacker Bryson Brown added another local name to Oklahoma States growing recruiting momentum, giving the Cowboys a defender with a hometown connection and a bit of late-cycle intrigue. Browns commitment also fits the broader pattern of Oklahoma State building early buzz on the defensive side, as the program continues to stack pieces for its next class.
Browns decision is notable because it comes after a recruiting path that had already taken him elsewhere, and because the timing lines up with a shifting landscape for both programs. Baylors coaching change opened the door for movement, while Oklahoma States strong start under Eric Morris has helped make Stillwater look like an increasingly appealing destination for defensive prospects. Oklahoma State Faces A Telling Test Iowa State Could Expose
Oklahoma State heads to Jack Trice Stadium on Oct. 31 with a ranking next to its name and plenty of numbers that make the matchup with Iowa State look intriguing on paper. The Cowboys offense has been one of the nations most productive, and the comparison with the Cyclones is the kind of deep dive that can tell you more about a team than the record ever will, especially when the conversation turns to yards per game, turnovers and special teams.
Iowa State also brings enough balance to make this more than just a test of firepower, because its defensive profile and overall efficiency can stress a ranked opponent in ways that box scores do not always show. For Oklahoma State, the real question is whether its offensive edge travels well enough to hold up in a road game where every hidden yard, every possession and every special teams snap could swing the night. Oklahoma State Still Has A Real Big 12 Path If One Thing Breaks Right
The Big 12 race still has a few twists left, and Oklahoma State is hanging around long enough to keep the conversation going. With Utah, Arizona, BYU, the Cowboys and Texas Tech all jockeying for Arlington, the remaining schedules matter almost as much as the standings themselves, and Oklahoma States position is more encouraging than it might have looked a few weeks ago. The title picture is crowded, but there is still a believable route for the Cowboys if the right results fall their way.
What makes it interesting for Oklahoma State is how much of the leagues math is tied to a handful of games that could reshape the bracket in a hurry. The Cowboys need help elsewhere, of course, but they also have a chance to control their own part of the equation in the coming stretch, with one matchup looming larger than the rest as a potential separator in the chase for the conference championship game. If that one breaks in OSUs favor, the rest of the path starts to look a lot clearer. [Read more 🡒]
