Saturday night in Morgantown brings a Big 12 matchup with plenty of offensive juice, and the betting market has already made its feelings clear. Oklahoma State opened as a 2.5-point favorite against West Virginia, but the line has moved toward the unbeaten Mountaineers, who are 3-0 and coming off a win over a ranked Virginia team.
The total has climbed as well, now sitting at 60.5, and it’s not hard to see why. Both teams have quarterbacks capable of taking over a game, and both offenses have already shown they can pile up points fast. That sets up a compelling test for Drew Mestemaker and Michael Hawkins Jr. in a game that looks built to shoot past the number.
Mestemaker’s path to this stage has been unusual. He arrived at Oklahoma State after walking on at North Texas, where he eventually won the starting job before following coach Eric Morris to Stillwater. Last season, Mestemaker threw for 4,379 yards and 34 scores for North Texas, and he’s carried that production into 2026.
Through three games, the sophomore has thrown for 882 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions. He’s been sharp at times, including a five-touchdown performance in a blowout win over Murray State, when he completed 20 of 22 passes. The turnovers remain the one obvious issue, but the arm talent is easy to see.
West Virginia has its own answer in Hawkins, one of the country’s most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks so far this season. He has 477 passing yards, five passing touchdowns, 322 rushing yards and six rushing scores in 2026, and he’s helped push the Mountaineers’ offense to No. 28 nationally in EPA/Play.
The way West Virginia plays fits that profile, too. The Mountaineers run the ball a ton, and they rank 12th in the country in EPA/Pass and 34th in EPA/Rush this season. That balance, paired with Hawkins’ ability to stress defenses both through the air and on the ground, is a big reason they’ve been able to start 3-0.
Oklahoma State has shown similar explosive potential, even if its season has already had a jolt. The Cowboys stumbled badly in Week 1 against Tulsa, then turned around and upset Oregon in Week 2. They followed that with a 59-0 win over Murray State, a game that gave their numbers a much-needed boost.
The Cowboys scored 39 points in the Oregon upset and combined for 70 in that game. Last week’s rout brought another 59 points. Even with the rough opener, Oklahoma State’s offense is built around a quarterback who can push the ball and produce chunk plays, and that makes this a much more dangerous team than its early-season ranking suggests.
Defensively, neither side has exactly shut the door. Both teams rank 60th or lower in defensive EPA/Play, which is another reason the OVER has become the more attractive side.
Oklahoma State now sits 13th in success rate after the Murray State blowout, while West Virginia is even better at sustaining drives, ranking 21st nationally in third- and fourth-down success rate. The Cowboys are tied for 36th in that category.
That’s the real path to points here: keep the chains moving, keep the possessions alive, and let the quarterbacks do the rest. With two offenses that can score in different ways, 30-plus points for both teams feels very realistic.
West Virginia has the home-field edge and the momentum, but this matchup still looks like a track meet waiting to happen. The better angle is the over at 60.5.
