Oklahoma State Already Has A Problem That Could Haunt This Team

Wisconsin's sharpshooting prowess leaves Oklahoma State scrambling for answers ahead of the regular season.

Wisconsin’s final tune-up was less about late drama and more about how cleanly the Badgers picked apart Oklahoma State from the perimeter.

At the Kohl Center on Tuesday night, Wisconsin rolled to an 82-65 exhibition win to finish a perfect three-game preseason, and the shooting numbers told the story right away. The Badgers knocked down 18 of 41 from 3-point range, a 43.9 percent clip, while Oklahoma State managed only five makes on 24 attempts. Add in the Cowboys’ 22 turnovers, and Wisconsin had all the breathing room it needed.

The three-point margin was staggering: Wisconsin outscored Oklahoma State 54-15 from beyond the arc, a 39-point edge in a game decided by 17.

This wasn’t a one-man shooting show, either. Eight Badgers hit at least one three, giving Greg Gard’s group a spread-out attack that kept the Cowboys guessing. Eian Elmer buried three triples, while Trey Autry and Zach Kinziger each added two off the bench.

Owen Foxwell paced Wisconsin with 19 points, 16 of them in the first half, and he also chipped in three assists and three rebounds. Elmer finished with 11 points, and Nolan Winter, Braeden Carrington and Austin Rapp each scored 10. Wisconsin’s bench produced 39 points, dwarfing Oklahoma State’s 14.

That kind of balance matters, especially with roster changes still shaping the team. Wisconsin showed it can hurt defenses from multiple spots, and it backed that up with 17 assists to Oklahoma State’s nine.

The Cowboys had a few things working in their favor, though not enough to change the outcome. They outrebounded Wisconsin 38-36 and owned the paint 24-12, so the interior battle wasn’t the issue.

The problem was the rest of the floor. Oklahoma State shot 40 percent overall and just 20.8 percent from three, and the missed shots turned into a long night on the road.

Junior center Julius Halaifonua led the Cowboys with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Jacob Walker added 12 points and four assists, while Kashie Natt posted 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists after nearly recording a triple-double against Tulsa in the previous exhibition.

Oklahoma State did show more life after halftime. The Cowboys hit 13 of 23 shots in the second half, good for 56.5 percent, and a 7-0 run cut the Wisconsin lead to 65-57 with 7:19 left. But Carrington answered with a three, and the Badgers never really lost control.

The Cowboys finished their three-game exhibition slate at 1-2 and open the regular season November 2 against Incarnate Word. Wisconsin begins official play that same day against Denver.

Oklahoma State Enters A Brutal Stretch With Little Room For Error

Oklahoma State heads into a tough Big 12 run with little margin for slipups, starting with a road trip to Iowa State and three of its next four games away from Stillwater. The Cowboys are ranked No. 24 and have leaned on an offense that leads the conference in scoring, while the defense offered a better look in the recent win over Colorado, giving the team at least some momentum as the schedule tightens.

Iowa State brings its own wrinkles into the matchup, beginning with a quarterback situation that coach Jimmy Rogers has handled carefully after recent changes under center. The Cyclones also have a few versatile pieces who can affect a game in multiple ways, which makes this an especially tricky opener for an Oklahoma State team trying to protect its early standing and avoid getting caught in the wrong kind of conference grind. Oklahoma States New Roster Just Got An Early Reality Check

Oklahoma States first real look at its new basketball roster came with a reminder of how quickly an exhibition can turn into a measuring-stick game. The Cowboys fell 82-65 to Wisconsin at the Kohl Center, spending most of the night chasing a Badgers team that controlled the tempo and kept the pressure on from the perimeter. Oklahoma State did manage to shoot the ball better after halftime, but the early hole proved too deep to climb out of.

Julius Halaifonua led the Cowboys with 16 points, and Jacob Walker added 12 as Oklahoma State tried to find some offensive rhythm against a veteran Wisconsin group. Owen Foxwell paced the Badgers with 19 points in a game that gave the Cowboys plenty to clean up before the results start to count for real. [Read more 🡒]

Former OSU QB Sees One Big Test Coming For Drew Mestemaker

Former Oklahoma State quarterback Clint Chelf liked what he has seen from the Cowboys lately, especially the way Drew Mestemaker has settled in and the way the offense has started to come together around him. The line in front of Mestemaker has been a big part of that progress, and Chelf pointed to that growth as one of the main reasons the unit has looked more comfortable and more productive.

The next challenge, though, comes in one of the toughest spots on the schedule: a Halloween night trip to Iowa State. Chelf talked about the environment and the conditions that can make that game hard to navigate, which adds another layer to an already important test for a quarterback still building his reputation. Mestemaker has already started to turn heads beyond Stillwater, and there is still real interest in how far he can carry this offense from here. [Read more 🡒]
