Oklahoma State Reels In Star RB KD Jones After Commitment Flip from Kansas
The top running back in Oklahoma is heading back to Stillwater.
Jenks High School standout KD Jones, one of the most explosive offensive weapons in the state, has officially flipped his commitment from Kansas to Oklahoma State and signed with the Cowboys. It’s a full-circle moment for Jones, who originally committed to OSU in March before decommitting in September following the dismissal of longtime head coach Mike Gundy.
Now, with new head coach Eric Morris at the helm, the Cowboys have landed a major in-state prize - and one who’s already etched his name into Oklahoma high school football history.
At 6-foot, 175 pounds, Jones is rated as the No. 6 overall prospect in the state and held offers from 27 programs across the country. Back in March, he chose Oklahoma State over Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisville, and Vanderbilt during his commitment ceremony. While he briefly pivoted to the Jayhawks, Wednesday’s signing locks him in with the Cowboys once again - and this time, it’s official.
And it’s not hard to see why OSU made him a priority.
Jones just wrapped up a senior season for the ages at Jenks. In a 60-28 quarterfinal win - his second-to-last high school game - he ran wild for 221 yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries. He added five catches for 51 yards and another score, showcasing the all-purpose versatility that makes him such a dangerous threat at the next level.
That performance was just one chapter in a dominant campaign. Jones became the Trojans’ all-time leading rusher with 4,757 career yards.
He posted multiple 200-yard games this season alone, none more jaw-dropping than his October outing against Mustang, when he erupted for 445 yards and eight touchdowns. That’s not a typo - eight trips to the end zone in a single game.
Jones isn’t just a stat machine - he’s the kind of player who brings intensity and drive to everything he does. His former running backs coach, Jeremy Smith, spoke about that mindset earlier this year.
“It’s probably his passion for the game, which correlates to his work ethic and the things that he wants for himself,” Smith said. “He will say some things, and then really go and manifest it and really just put it together.
That’s what it’s really all about. Again, just a hard worker.
If the guy says he’s going to do something, he’s going to do it. He’s a man of his word.”
That work ethic is backed up by the tape - and the scouting reports.
According to 247Sports recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks, Jones brings a complete skill set that should translate quickly to the Power Five level. Brooks praised Jones’ burst, vision, and physicality, calling him a “capable runner in a variety of situations with impressive initial accelerating juice.” He’s not a flashy open-field dancer, but he doesn’t need to be - his ability to get skinny through tight spaces, finish runs with balance, and contribute as a receiver and return man makes him a highly versatile weapon.
Brooks also noted Jones’ awareness in blitz pickup and his solid track and field background from earlier in his high school career - all signs of a well-rounded back who’s ready to compete.
For Oklahoma State, Jones becomes the 15th signee under Morris and a foundational piece in what the Cowboys hope is a new era of offensive explosiveness. With his combination of vision, toughness, and versatility, Jones doesn’t just look like a future contributor - he looks like a future difference-maker.
