How Tarps Off Became An Oklahoma State Tradition Fans Love

What started as a friendly wager turned into a viral sensation, revolutionizing fan culture across multiple sports stadiums.

A year ago in Stillwater, a $10 dare turned into one of college football’s strangest and loudest fan moments.

Oklahoma State was in trouble on October 11, 2025. The Cowboys had dropped four straight, sat at 1-4, and were headed toward a fifth loss against Houston.

Boone Pickens Stadium had gone quiet. Then, midway through the third quarter, Calista Bradford bet her brother $10 to take off his shirt and start swinging it in the student section.

That was the spark.

One shirtless fan became three full sections of them. OSU band members jumped in.

Male cheerleaders joined the scene. At one point, a shirtless fan even hung out of one of the Boone Pickens Stadium suites.

After the game, interim head coach Doug Meacham made sure to recognize what the students did to keep the building alive.

“I want to say how awesome it was… I don’t know who those kids were up there with their shirts off, but it was awesome,” Meacham said. “It was phenomenal because it’s human nature to pout and go home when things aren’t going the way you hoped.

Our guys definitely felt it, and you don’t see that too often. I appreciate our students hanging in there with us and giving us something to play for.”

Linebacker Malik Charles saw the same thing from the field and said the energy kept growing fast.

“I saw three people at first. Then I put my helmet on, went on the field, came off, and it was a whole crowd - and they were loud from up there too,” Charles said.

“It was actually insane. I thought it was really cool.

A lot of people could have said it was hot and just went inside or left the game. I appreciate them flipping the narrative and being like, ‘We’re going to come here and support the guys.’

I love that.”

ESPN later named Oklahoma State’s Section 231 its Fans of the Week for Week 7.

The look spread well beyond Stillwater. The “Tarps Off” idea showed up at college football games at UCLA and Wisconsin, then rolled into Major League Baseball stadiums over the summer.

The St. Louis Cardinals even set aside an entire upper-right-field bleacher section for shirtless fans.

Back in Stillwater, though, the contrast is sharp. Boone Pickens Stadium was sold out for Saturday’s game against UCF.

The crowd was loud again. Oklahoma State is 4-1 and 2-0 in the Big 12, with a win over then-Number 6 Oregon.

What began as a strange solution to a bleak afternoon has turned into a viral memory Oklahoma State will carry with it.

Oklahoma State Homecoming Clash With Colorado Carries One Frustrating Unknown

Oklahoma States homecoming weekend now comes with a little extra waiting. The Big 12 has already locked in one Week 8 kickoff and TV assignment for the 2026 season, with the Cowboys game against Houston slated for 6:30 p.m. on Fox in a Top 25 matchup, but the league is still sorting out the rest of the schedule puzzle around that date.

For the Cowboys, the more immediate frustration is tied to Colorado, the homecoming opponent whose time and television slot still are not set. The conference has a cluster of Week 8 games on six-day holds that will be finalized Sunday, leaving one of the seasons more notable home dates in limbo for now and putting a familiar kind of Big 12 uncertainty around a game Oklahoma State fans will circle well in advance. Oklahoma State Faces A Big 12 Test That Could Expose One Edge

Oklahoma State heads into a big Big 12 road test at Houston with plenty at stake beyond just another conference win. The Cowboys, now 20th in the AP poll, are looking to keep themselves positioned for a run at a Big 12 Championship Game berth, while No. 18 Houston has the kind of ranking and rsum that can make this trip feel like a measuring stick for where the Cowboys really stand.

Eric Morris team will have to handle a Cougars squad that has been steady enough to climb into the top 25 and strong enough to make home field matter. The matchup brings together two ranked teams with similar ambitions and little margin for error, which is why Oklahoma States challenge is about more than just keeping pace in the league race. Caleb Hawkins Could Help Oklahoma State Land Another Playmaker

Caleb Hawkins move from North Texas to Oklahoma State has already paid off for the Cowboys, giving them a runner who came back close to his hometown and high school and quickly became one of the most productive players on the roster. He leads Oklahoma State in rushing yards and touchdowns this season, which has only raised his profile inside the program as the kind of transfer who can make an immediate impact.

Now that success may have a ripple effect beyond Caleb himself. The Cowboys have also been working on the next Hawkins in the family tree, a versatile young recruit from Rock Creek High School who remains uncommitted and has recently taken a look at Stillwater, with the coaching staff seeing him as a potential fit in the offense. In a cycle where family ties and scheme fit often matter as much as any sales pitch, Oklahoma State has at least put itself in the conversation. [Read more 🡒]
