Drew Mestemakers Rise Is Suddenly A Huge Oklahoma State Question

Drew Mestemaker's rising NFL draft prospects could significantly influence Oklahoma State's strategy and long-term planning.

For Oklahoma State, the bye week brought a rare pause on the field - but not around the program’s future. While the Cowboys rested, practiced and watched the rest of the Big 12 unfold in Week 5, a new ESPN ranking pushed Drew Mestemaker’s NFL stock into the spotlight and, with it, added another layer to what Eric Morris has to plan for beyond this season.

ESPN’s top 50 prospects for the 2027 NFL Draft put Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith at No. 1, with comparisons to Randy Moss already following him this early in his career. The top quarterback on the list, though, was Mestemaker - not Oregon’s Dante Moore and not Notre Dame’s C.J. Carr.

That matters because Mestemaker’s name was not always living in first-round conversations. Just a month ago, some mock drafts didn’t even place him in Round 1.

But a prospect ranking is a different animal. It’s about how a player projects, how he fits, and how much evaluators believe in the tools.

In that sense, ESPN’s placement gives Mestemaker’s future a little more gravity, even with the season still young.

Jordan Reid slotted Mestemaker as his top quarterback despite the fact that the Austin, Texas, native has only faced two power conference opponents. Reid also made clear that Mestemaker is still a work in progress.

“He has an unconventional style, holding the ball at his waistline before ripping a fiery, three-quarters release,” Reid wrote. “Mestemaker has the confidence to test the tightest of windows from various platforms, but that can get the best of him and lead to turnovers.”

That part of the evaluation matches what Cowboys fans have already seen. Through four games, Mestemaker has thrown for 1,271 yards and 11 touchdowns, but he has also been loose with the football, throwing five interceptions and losing two fumbles. With the amount of work he’s going to get in this offense, Morris will probably live with the tradeoff.

Morris has been openly high on Mestemaker’s mechanics, how quickly he processes information and the way he makes decisions. There’s been plenty on tape to back that up, especially in the second half against West Virginia, when Mestemaker showed the full range of what he can do.

The interest from NFL circles is no surprise either. Morris’ track record with quarterbacks has already shown up on Sundays, with Cam Ward as his latest success story in the league.

When Oklahoma State played Oregon, there were two dozen scouts in attendance, plus two NFL general managers. Moore and Mestemaker were both on the radar, but Mestemaker still gave them plenty to study.

That leaves Morris in a familiar spot for a coach who develops quarterbacks well: preparing for the possibility that his starter won’t be around forever. Mestemaker will be draft-eligible after this season, and he’ll get feedback from the NFL on where he stands.

He’ll also be looking at a quarterback class that could be crowded, with Moore, Carr and Texas quarterback Arch Manning all potentially in the mix. Even a first-round grade doesn’t guarantee a smooth landing.

In a class like that, a player can slide or climb fast.

There’s also another path. Mestemaker could wait for the 2028 Draft, where a thinner quarterback group might improve his chances of going in the first round.

That decision won’t be his alone. Morris, the rest of the coaching staff, the NFL, his family and an agent will all be part of that conversation.

Meanwhile, Morris has to keep building for both outcomes. The two quarterbacks behind Mestemaker who are expected back in 2027 are both true freshmen.

Carson White is already committed in the Class of 2027, and Morris was in Edmond checking out a four-star quarterback for 2028. The transfer portal remains another possible route if Oklahoma State needs a more experienced arm.

If Mestemaker leaves, that’s the pool Morris will work from. If he stays, Oklahoma State gets another season with a quarterback who has already helped push the program forward in a hurry. Either way, the ranking from ESPN underscored the same reality: Mestemaker’s play is creating options for himself, and headaches for everyone else trying to plan around him.

Oklahoma State Legend Just Weighed In On Chad Weibergs Uncertain Future

Oklahoma States athletic department has found itself at the center of some uneasy chatter lately, with Chad Weibergs future drawing plenty of attention from Cowboys fans and former supporters alike. Weiberg, an OSU alumnus who has worked in a variety of college athletics administrative roles, has been the schools athletic director since 2021, and the discussion around his standing has only added to the sense of uncertainty around the programs leadership.

Among the voices stepping forward is Thurman Thomas, the Hall of Fame Cowboy who has remained one of the schools most recognizable ambassadors. His support carries weight in Stillwater, especially with the board of regents expected to factor into whatever comes next for Weiberg, leaving OSU in a position where the conversation feels as important as the decision itself. Oklahoma States Bye Week Put One Ranking Question Front And Center

A week off can sharpen a teams edge, but it also can sharpen the questions around it, and Oklahoma State has one sitting right there after its 41-24 win over West Virginia. The Cowboys are still carrying the look of a team that can score with just about anybody, sitting second nationally in total offense, and the defense added enough encouraging moments last time out with an interception, four sacks and eight tackles for loss.

The bigger issue is how those ingredients are being viewed beyond Stillwater, where the AP Top 25 has the Cowboys at No. 19 after the win. The coaches saw them a little differently, though, and the gap between those rankings says plenty about where Oklahoma State stands heading into the bye, with the team still trying to turn strong production into something that holds up in every poll and every week. Oklahoma State's Oregon Story Suddenly Has Much Bigger Stakes

Oregons rise in the AP Top 25 has given Oklahoma States early-season connection to the Ducks a much bigger feel than it had a few weeks ago. The Ducks checked in at No. 13 and, in On3s latest playoff projection, they are still very much in the mix for a spot in the expanded College Football Playoff as they head into a demanding stretch that includes UCLA and Nebraska, plus a looming Oct. 31 meeting with Northwestern.

The quarterback situation only adds another layer, with Dante Moore expected back after a concussion as Oregon tries to keep its playoff path clean. For Oklahoma State, the interest is obvious because the Ducks are no longer just a nonconference opponent on the schedule, but a team with real postseason implications tied to its name, its ranking and the way the rest of the Big Ten race unfolds.
