Caleb Hawkins Just Put Himself In Oklahoma State History

Caleb Hawkins solidifies his place in Oklahoma State lore by becoming the program's latest 1,000-yard rusher with a standout first-quarter performance against Kansas State.

Caleb Hawkins didn’t waste much time making his mark on Oklahoma State history.

By the end of the first quarter against Kansas State on Saturday, the sophomore running back had already piled up 97 rushing yards and two touchdowns, pushing him past 1,000 yards for the season in his first year with the Cowboys. Hawkins, who played at North Texas last season, reached 1,003 yards on the day and became Oklahoma State’s first 1,000-yard rusher since Ollie Gordon II in 2023.

The Owasso, Okla., native did plenty of damage early against a Kansas State defense that came in ranked No. 103 against the run, allowing 166 yards per game. The Wildcats had also struggled to hold up against inside runs, and Hawkins and Oklahoma State’s offensive line took advantage right away.

His first-quarter burst included scoring runs of 21 and 37 yards. The second touchdown needed a replay review before it was confirmed that Hawkins had broken the plane as he went to the ground. He also ripped off a 31-yard run that set up the game’s first touchdown, a pass from quarterback Drew Mestemaker to wide receiver Justin Bowick.

Hawkins’ impact has gone beyond the ground game over the past three weeks. Coming into the matchup, he was one of four FBS players and one of two power conference players - along with Duke’s Nate Sheppard - who had reached 100 yards from scrimmage in seven games this season. He cleared that mark again in the first quarter, adding one catch for 10 yards.

That versatility has fueled a massive stretch. Over his last three games, Hawkins has totaled 600 yards rushing and receiving, with 378 on the ground and 278 through the air. He’s also found the end zone four times in that span.

With his latest milestone, Hawkins joined a long line of Oklahoma State backs who have topped 1,000 rushing yards in a season, a group that includes Thurman Thomas, Barry Sanders, Terry Miller, David Thompson, Tatum Bell, Kendall Hunter, Justice Hill and Ollie Gordon II.

He also moved up the Cowboys’ career rushing chart. Hawkins is now the 47th player in program history to reach 1,000 career rushing yards, and his 1,003 yards moved him past Rennie Childs for No. 46 on the all-time list. Childs finished with 1,001 career rushing yards from 2013-16.

Four Oklahoma State backs have gone over 4,000 career rushing yards: Thomas with 4,595, Miller with 4,582, Thompson with 4,318 and Hunter with 4,181.

Oklahoma State's Offensive Outburst Raised One Big Early Question

Oklahoma States season opener turned into a runaway at Gallagher-Iba Arena, where the Cowboys overwhelmed Queens (NC) 118-68 behind a blistering shooting night and a deep bench. Oklahoma State hit 62.0% of its shots, knocked down 16 three-pointers and got 74 points from its reserves, the kind of all-around offensive burst that can make an early November game feel over before it settles in.

The performance also came with a pile of record-book footnotes, a reminder that the Cowboys were not just efficient but disruptive from start to finish. There was plenty to like in the pace, the balance and the pressure, even if the bigger question now is how much of that production can carry over when the competition tightens and the easy baskets disappear. Oklahoma State Enters Crucial Road Test With A New Defensive Concern

Oklahoma State heads into a tricky road matchup at Kansas State with its defensive depth already getting tested. The Cowboys will be missing linebacker Tate Romney and defensive end Jaleel Johnson, part of a group of five players ruled out for the game, while two others were taken off the injury report and appear set to be available.

The timing matters because this is the kind of Big 12 trip where every available body counts, especially on a defense trying to hold up away from home. Kansas State has its own injury questions after downgrading four players to doubtful and upgrading one to probable, but Oklahoma State still has to sort through a thinner rotation and find answers on the fly before kickoff. Oklahoma State Gets A Huge Opening In Critical Kansas State Trip

Oklahoma State heads into a tricky November road test in Manhattan with a chance to steady itself after a loss to Iowa State, and the timing could hardly be better. The Cowboys are 5-3 overall and 3-2 in Big 12 play, and Saturday's noon CT kickoff at Bill Snyder Family Stadium gives them a chance to keep pace in the conference against a Kansas State team that has had an uneven season.

The Wildcats are 4-4 and just 1-4 in league play, and the matchup already carried plenty of weight before the latest quarterback wrinkle added another layer of uncertainty. For Oklahoma State, it is the kind of game that can change the tone of a stretch run, with the broadcast set for TNT and streaming available on Fubo. [Read more 🡒]
