Caleb Hawkins Is Giving Oklahoma State Fans A Reason To Dream Big

Caleb Hawkins' record-breaking first year elevates him to a contender for one of college football's most prestigious awards.

Oklahoma State running back Caleb Hawkins has added another preseason honor to a growing stack of them, landing on the watch list for the 2026 Walter Camp Player of the Year.

The Walter Camp Football Foundation announced the list Monday, and Hawkins is one of 50 players from across the FBS - including 11 running backs - in the mix for the award.

Hawkins arrived at Oklahoma State from North Texas after the 2025 season and is expected to be a major part of the Cowboys’ offense in 2026. The buzz around him is already loud. He was previously named to the 2026 Maxwell Award watch list and the 2026 Walter Camp Preseason All-America team.

That attention comes with a résumé that jumps off the page. Hawkins wrapped up the 2025 season as a Walter Camp, Sporting News and Phil Steele All-America selection after setting the NCAA record for most touchdowns scored by a freshman.

His 29 total touchdowns and 25 rushing touchdowns both led the FBS, while his 174 points scored and 13.4 points per game also finished No. 1 nationally. He also earned American Conference Rookie of the Year honors and was a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award.

The Walter Camp Player of the Year watch list will be cut to 10 semifinalists in early November, then three finalists in early December. The winner, selected by the 138 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced in the second week of December.

Oklahoma State's 2026 Schedule Puts Eric Morris Under An Early Spotlight

The AP preseason Top 25 put Oklahoma State just outside the rankings, but the Cowboys still drew eight votes, a small signal that there is some respect around the program as it heads into a new era under Eric Morris. The schedule, though, is where the real test begins to take shape, with a slate that includes games against Oregon, Texas Tech and Houston and plenty of chances to show whether the Cowboys can climb back into the conversation.

Morris does not get much of a runway before the spotlight turns on him, and these matchups will help define how quickly Oklahoma State can settle in under its new coach. Oregon looms as the most obvious measuring stick, while the Big 12 stretches against Texas Tech and Houston add their own pressure, giving the Cowboys a series of early reveals about where the program stands and how much progress is still needed. Oklahoma State Has An Early Big 12 Debate Fans Will Love

Oklahoma State enters the season with a little extra validation in hand after landing at No. 34 in the AP preseason poll, three spots higher than where the coaches placed the Cowboys. For a program trying to stack momentum before Big 12 play starts, even a small difference like that can matter, especially when it feeds the kind of early debate fans are eager to have about where the Cowboys fit in the league picture.

The bigger picture is even more interesting when you look at the schedule. The AP rankings of Big 12 teams and Oklahoma State opponents suggest the Cowboys are set up with a relatively manageable conference slate, since they are ranked behind only three teams on the schedule. That does not make the road easy, but it does leave room for Oklahoma State to make an argument if it handles business against the opponents it is expected to outrank. [Read more 🡒]
