Scott Frost’s second stint at UCF is starting to look a lot less like the old “Fast and Fierce” identity built on points and tempo, and a lot more like a team trying to win with its defense.
That side of the ball has carried the Knights through the first month. UCF has allowed just 15 points per game, and opponents have managed only 15 combined second-half points. The Knights are fourth in the Big 12 in scoring defense, a big reason they’re 3-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Saturday’s 21-13 win over TCU showed exactly how UCF wants to play right now. The Knights got after Horned Frogs quarterback Jaden Craig, piling up four sacks and eight tackles for loss while coming away with four takeaways. Those turnovers turned into seven points, and UCF has now forced nine total turnovers - six interceptions and three fumble recoveries - to rank tied for seventh nationally in total takeaways with four other teams.
That’s a sharp jump from last season, when the Knights forced 14 turnovers in 12 games.
“The No. 1 thing that stands out with our defense is how hard they play,” Frost said Monday. “We’ve got a lot of guys bought in right now and playing for each other.”
Defensive tackle R.J. Jackson said the unit has fully leaned into that mindset.
“It’s fast, fierce and physical,” he said. “That’s what we try to live by and preach, week in and week out.”
The offense, meanwhile, has not matched the defense’s level. UCF is averaging just 355 yards per game, which sits near the bottom of the Big 12. Against Power Four opponents, that number drops to 236 yards per game.
Through four games, the pattern is clear: when the defense plays at a high level, the Knights give themselves a chance.
Now comes the real stress test.
UCF faces a rough four-week run that starts with a trip to No. 20 Houston on Saturday and continues with another road game at No.
19 Oklahoma State on Oct. 10.
After a bye week, the Knights return home to play No. 10 BYU on Oct.
It’s the first time UCF has faced a three-game stretch against ranked opponents since 2017, when it closed the season against No. 22 USF, No.
16 Memphis and No. 7 Auburn.
The Knights won all three of those games and finished 13-0.
This stretch is especially daunting because all three opponents sit among the Big 12’s top offenses: Oklahoma State ranks first, Houston second and BYU fourth.
“We’ve won our first conference home opener since we’ve been in the league and then on the heels of that, we don’t play a home game for a month,” Frost said. “We only have four road conference games and we’ve got two in a row on the road and then a bye week and then BYU.
“It’s a challenging stretch. Those are three really good football teams.”
UCF has struggled against ranked teams since joining the Big 12 in 2023, going 1-5 in those games. The one win came against then-No.
15 Oklahoma State, 45-3, on Nov. 11, 2023.
The Knights are also dealing with a 10-game road losing streak that dates back to 2024.
Even so, the message inside the program is simple. The focus is on Houston and nothing beyond that.
“We just want to get a win,” said Jackson. “It’s another opportunity to get another win. That’s the only way I see it and that’s what we plan to do on Saturday.”
Added receiver Josh Derry: “We’re just taking it one game at a time.”
