Venables Just Reopened A Painful Oklahoma Offense Debate

Brent Venables' acknowledgment of Buster Faulkner's impact in Florida underscores the consequences of Oklahoma's choices in shaping their offensive future.

Brent Venables didn’t hide what he thinks makes Buster Faulkner tick, and in the process he offered a pretty clear reminder of why Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator search ended the way it did.

Faulkner, now in his first year as Florida’s offensive coordinator under Jon Sumrall, was one of the names linked to Oklahoma before Ben Arbuckle got the job. On Tuesday, Venables painted a picture of a coach who fits a certain mold: physical, adaptable and comfortable thinking about offense through a defensive lens.

“He's a tough guy and knows the value of running the football and the things that come with that, with the success that you have running the football,” Venables said on Tuesday.

Venables went a step further, saying Faulkner’s background gives him an edge because he doesn’t just see the game from one side.

“I think the best thing that he does, he looks at things from a defensive structure,” Venables said. “He understands defense and how to attack defense. So, his time probably with Kirby (Smart), amongst others.”

That experience matters, Venables suggested, because Faulkner learned from a defense-first environment while serving as a quality control coach and quarterbacks coach at Georgia, where he helped the Bulldogs win two national championships in back-to-back seasons. Venables also pointed to Faulkner’s own playing background, noting that he was a college quarterback at Valdosta State and Texas A&M-Commerce, now known as East Texas A&M.

“He's played the game collegiately. He's a quarterback in college, and he's been a winner wherever he goes.

But he knows how to attack defensive structure. He understands deeply what that looks like,” Venables said.

For Oklahoma, the timing of all this lands awkwardly. The Sooners are heading into their first road trip to The Swamp with plenty to sort out, and Faulkner’s name lingering around the OC conversation only sharpens the contrast with how things played out in Norman.

Venables had already admitted two years ago that promoting Seth Littrell was a mistake, taking the blame and promising the next move would be better. That next move, though, was cut loose on Monday. Now Venables says his attention is on Florida, even as the decision-making around Oklahoma’s offensive direction continues to hang over the program.

Florida Suddenly Has A Major Lineup Problem Before Oklahoma

Floridas trip to face Oklahoma is suddenly looking a lot different, and not in a way the Gators wanted. Starting defensive tackle Jeramiah McCloud will be suspended for the game because of conduct detrimental to the team, leaving Florida to reshuffle the middle of its defense against a Sooners offense that will be paying close attention to the interior matchup.

The injury report adds even more uncertainty around the depth chart, with receiver Vernell Brown III and defensive end Emmanuel Oyebadejo among the players listed as doubtful or questionable. Florida is already preparing lineup adjustments and has identified replacements for some of the missing starters, but the full picture of how the Gators will line up in Norman is still taking shape. Oklahoma Heads Into Florida With One Major Secondary Concern

Oklahomas trip to Florida comes with a familiar late-week wrinkle, as the Sooners are sorting through a secondary that may not be at full strength when they arrive in Gainesville. Cornerback Eli Bowen and safety Peyton Bowen are both listed as questionable, adding some uncertainty to a unit that already has to account for several other absences on the roster, including Jacobe Johnson, Dakoda Fields and Ryan Fodje.

The timing matters because Florida also has its own injury questions, with wide receiver Vernell Brown III listed as doubtful. For Oklahoma, though, the bigger concern is how much flexibility it will have on the back end if those defensive pieces cannot go, especially against a Gators offense that will be looking to test the Sooners wherever the depth chart looks thinnest. Oklahoma May Get A Crucial O Line Boost At Florida

A key piece of Oklahomas offensive line could be back in the mix for the trip to Florida, with center Jake Maikkula listed as probable after dealing with a lower-body injury. For a Sooners offense heading into a road test, getting a center back in the lineup would be a meaningful lift, especially with the game coming against a Gators front that has its own injury concerns.

Oklahoma is also monitoring tight end Rocky Beers and defensive backs Peyton and Eli Bowen, who are both listed as questionable. Florida, meanwhile, is dealing with several notable absences of its own, including starting offensive tackle Emeka Ugorji, while wide receivers Bailey Stockton and Vernell Brown III and defensive end Emmanuel Oyebadejo are all in question as well.
