Peyton Manning is staying loyal to family in the Tennessee-Texas showdown, and that means the Volunteers won’t be getting his full support this weekend.
With No. 14 Tennessee set to host No.
1 Texas at Neyland Stadium, Manning found himself in a classic split-loyalties spot. His alma mater is in the spotlight, but so is his nephew, Arch, and Manning made it clear where his heart lands.
“Obviously it's going to be a huge SEC game,” Manning said. “My dad dealt with it when I was in college, when Tennessee played Ole Miss.
I love my university, I love my alma mater, and I pull for them unconditionally, but nothing's more important to me than my family. When you have a nephew playing, I pull very hard for him every Saturday.
That's pretty much a no-brainer that you're pulling for your nephew to play well, but like I said, everybody knows pretty strongly where my loyalties lie on all other Saturdays.”
That leaves Tennessee fans with a familiar truth: Manning will always have love for the Vols, but not at the expense of his nephew. In a game like this, that’s hard to argue with.
The timing makes the whole thing even bigger. Both teams are 3-0, both are ranked in the Top 15, and College GameDay is headed to Knoxville for what should be a packed, loud week around campus. Tennessee has a real shot to pull off something major, even as the Vols open as 5.5-point underdogs.
Manning’s stance also seems to take him out of the running as the guest College GameDay picker for Tennessee-Texas. With his loyalties already pointed toward Arch and Texas, that door looks shut. Morgan Wallen or Candace Parker were floated as possible alternatives, though nothing has been decided.
Whoever gets the nod, the stage is set for a massive Saturday in SEC country. Tennessee’s leaders, including Faizon Brandon, Arion Carter, Braylon Staley, and David Sanders Jr., will be ready when kickoff arrives, and the locker room won’t be paying much attention to the line.
Peyton may not love the idea of a Vols upset, but if Tennessee gets it done, he’ll probably move on fast.
