Sooners Land Another Massive Recruiting Boost From In-State Commit

Rising high school star Gabriel Osborne Jr. elevates Oklahoma's recruiting class with his newly earned 5-star status, joining a growing list of top prospects committed to the Sooners.

Oklahoma’s 2027 recruiting haul picked up another major boost in the latest Rivals 300, with Mustang, Oklahoma cornerback Gabriel Osborne Jr. moving up to five-star status.

Osborne now checks in as the nation’s No. 21 player in the Class of 2027, and he joins offensive lineman Cooper Hackett and tight end Seneca Driver as Oklahoma commits with five-star labels. The 6-2, 180-pound defensive back committed to the Sooners on June 1, choosing OU over offers from several heavyweight programs, including Miami, Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan.

His pledge came after a big junior year at Mustang High School, where he piled up 65 tackles, three tackles for loss, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.

Osborne is also ranked as a five-star and the No. 16 overall prospect from the 2027 class.

Hackett and Driver remain among the headliners in the class as well. Hackett, a Fort Gibson, Oklahoma native, is ranked No. 12 in the Rivals 300. The 6-7, 260-pound offensive tackle originally committed to Texas Tech before flipping to Oklahoma in September.

Driver sits right behind him at No. 15. The Danville, Kentucky tight end measures 6-6 and 234 pounds and committed to OU on March 7, just months after the Sooners hired Jason Witten to coach tight ends.

Oklahoma’s class has plenty more names inside the Rivals 300, too. Bixby offensive lineman Kaeden Penny comes in at No. 27, making him the fourth-highest ranked player in the class without a five-star designation.

Linebacker Cooper Witten, Jason Witten’s son, is right there at No. 37.

Safety Bode Sparrow, who pledged to Oklahoma on June 26, landed at No. 59, just outside the top 50. Running back Keldrid Ben of Montgomery, Texas, is in the top 100 at No. 86.

Three more Sooners are also in the Rivals 300: quarterback Jamison Roberts at No. 162, linebacker Taven Epps at No. 219 and athlete Greydon Howell at No. 287.

With 27 commits, Oklahoma’s 2027 class sits No. 6 nationally in Rivals’ team rankings. Of those 27 pledges, 13 are rated as four-star prospects or better by the outlet.

Brent Venables Just Earned National Respect For Oklahomas Bigger Rebuild

Brent Venables keeps getting evaluated through the usual Oklahoma lens, but this latest nod points to something bigger than wins and losses. He was placed on the Dodd Trophy preseason watch list for the 2026 season, a reminder that the award is built around scholarship, leadership and integrity as much as on-field results, and that his work in Norman has been noticed well beyond the box score.

For Oklahoma, it also fits the broader rebuild Venables has been pushing since taking over, with player development and leadership at the center of the message. The Sooners have had only one head coach take home the award before, Bob Stoops in 2003, so any mention of Venables in that conversation says plenty about how his program is being viewed as he keeps trying to reshape the culture. Oklahoma Is Already Facing A Huge 2028 Fall Visit Test

With Oklahomas 2027 class sitting at 27 commitments heading toward Early Signing Day, the Sooners are already shifting some attention to the next wave and trying to get ahead of the 2028 board. Quarterback Trey Tagliaferri is in place as the programs first 2028 commit, but the bigger early challenge is figuring out which blue-chip defenders and other priority prospects will be willing to make Norman a regular stop as their recruiting cycle ramps up.

That makes the fall visit calendar a meaningful early test for the staff, especially with players like Keoni Snipes already on the radar and in-state prospect Kamieon Compton-Nero drawing plenty of outside attention as well. Oklahoma has offers out to several of the top names it wants to keep close, and the Sooners will be looking to turn that early interest into real gameday traffic before the 2028 race gets crowded.
