The Oklahoma Sooners have zeroed in on their quarterback of the future - and all signs are pointing toward Jamison Roberts being that guy.
On Thursday morning, Oklahoma picked up another projection to land the 2027 three-star signal-caller out of Saraland High School in Mobile, Alabama. At 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, Roberts has been steadily climbing up recruiting boards, and now he’s firmly at the top of OU’s quarterback wishlist. Rivals’ Chad Simmons and On3’s Steve Wiltfong both believe the Sooners are in the driver’s seat to land him.
Roberts recently named Oklahoma among his top eight schools, and he’s expected to be in Norman this March for the Sooners’ “Future Freaks” recruiting event - a key moment in what’s shaping up to be a full-court press from Brent Venables and offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle. Both coaches have made it clear: Roberts isn’t just another name on the board - he’s the name.
Since Arbuckle took over the offense, Oklahoma’s quarterback recruiting strategy has shifted. Nebraska commit Trae Taylor hasn’t drawn much attention from the new staff, and while Arbuckle made a strong push for LSU commit Peyton Houston, the Tigers ultimately won that battle. That leaves Roberts as the clear top target among the five QBs Oklahoma has offered in the 2027 class.
There are other names in the mix, but none with the same level of focus. Uncommitted prospects Jonathan Moore and Greydon Howell have offers from OU, but there's a belief that the staff may be eyeing them for other positions - defensive back for Moore and wide receiver for Howell. Then there’s Dane Weber, who visited Norman during the Sooners’ win over Missouri back in November, but he’s yet to receive an official offer.
So why Roberts? Despite his current three-star rating, Oklahoma clearly sees something special in him.
Whether it’s the frame, the arm talent, or the poise he’s shown at Saraland, the Sooners are betting on upside - and they’re not alone. Other programs are circling, but OU is making sure Roberts knows he’s the guy.
Looking at the current quarterback room in Norman, there’s a clear path for a young signal-caller to come in and compete. John Mateer returns as the starter for 2026, backed up by Whitt Newbauer and Jett Niu. Freshman Bowe Bentley joins the mix this year, and with Michael Hawkins Jr. transferring to West Virginia, there’s room for a new face to rise through the ranks.
For Roberts, the opportunity is real. For Oklahoma, the mission is clear: land their quarterback of the future - and they believe Jamison Roberts might just be that player.
