Oklahoma fans got a jolt when four-star commit Keldrid Ben lined up a new “final” announcement, but the signs around his recruitment still point back to Norman.
Ben has been committed to the Sooners since December, yet 247Sports recently listed Oklahoma, Florida and Oregon as the schools in the mix while noting that he “has scheduled a celebration and announcement regarding his recruitment.” That was enough to spark some anxiety for Oklahoma supporters. But the bigger picture suggests Brent Venables and his staff may not have much to sweat.
Oregon looked like the clearest threat at one point. Dan Lanning was set to host the 5-foot-10, 210-pound back from Texas on an official visit in early June, but that trip was canceled. That was a welcome development for Oklahoma and a strong sign that the Ducks may no longer be in position to pull off a flip.
Florida has also been involved, and Ben took his official visit to Gainesville in late May, where he met with Jon Sumrall and his new coaching staff. The Gators had 19 official visitors on campus that weekend, and 13 of them are committed to play for Sumrall at the next level.
Still, a new report from Hail Florida Hail painted a much cooler picture on Florida’s chances. Writer Benjamin Henderson said the Gators have never really been “close” to flipping Ben during this cycle, and he added that the mood among Florida fans isn’t especially optimistic about a surprise decision.
That leaves Oklahoma in the strongest position heading into the announcement. The most likely outcome appears to be Ben reaffirming his pledge and shutting down his recruitment. The celebration piece, then, would seem to be less about drama and more about Ben marking a major moment with his local community.
Ben is from Montgomery, Texas, about an hour outside Houston, and his rise has made him a point of pride back home. The 247Sports Composite ranks him as the No. 7 RB in the country, which explains why his recruitment has drawn so much attention.
The final answer is coming soon, but for now, Oklahoma has every reason to feel good about where this one stands.
