After a rough upset loss to East Texas A&M, OU men’s basketball steadied itself Friday night and rolled past Mississippi Valley State 84-57.
The Sooners didn’t exactly burst out of the gate, though. Points were hard to come by early in both halves, and OU needed a little time to find its rhythm. Fifth-year center Duke Brennan got the scoring started 2:41 into the first half, but the Sooners still didn’t reach 10 points until the 11:39 mark.
Even with the offense stuck in neutral, the defense kept OU afloat. The Sooners forced three turnovers before they hit that 10-point threshold, and the last steal in that stretch set up a B.J. Edwards 3-pointer that sparked a 10-1 run.
Edwards said the answer came from the other end of the floor first.
“(It) just relates back to the defense, us stringing together a couple of stops in a row,” Edwards said. “We already (had) the lead, (so) they can't do anything to get (back in the game). … The offense will come.”
Once OU settled in, the shots started flying. The Sooners took 40 3-pointers and connected on 32.5% of them, a sharp change from the 5-for-20 showing against East Texas A&M. That volume helped OU build and keep control of the game with a series of runs.
Porter Moser was pleased with both the shot selection and the willingness to keep firing.
“At one point, we were like, 4 for 21 from three in the first half, and I don't think one time I said, ‘Oh, that was a forced or bad three.’ They were all good threes,” Moser said.
“I'm glad we shot 40 of them because they were available. They were really closing off the paint.”
Edwards, junior forward Derrion Reid, freshman guard Quincy Wadley and fifth-year guard Pop Isaacs combined for 26 of those attempts, and OU finished with 13 made 3s as a team. That marked a clear jump from the 25.0% accuracy the Sooners posted in the loss to East Texas A&M.
Reid said the message is simple when the looks are there.
“Honestly, if it's coming, it's coming,” Reid said. “If you get an open shot, we expect everybody on our team to shoot it.
No matter if they're on (or) off. If it's open, it's open.”
Reid was one of the most reliable pieces on the floor for OU, finishing with 17 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals in 28 minutes against Mississippi Valley State. He also delivered in the East Texas A&M loss with 14 points, 10 rebounds and five stocks (steals and blocks), shooting 40% from the field and 50% from deep.
When the Sooners needed a bucket during their sluggish first half Friday, Reid was often the one they leaned on.
Moser pointed to Reid’s steadiness after the game.
“He's been solid,” Moser said. “He knows where to be.
… He's confident. He's not pressing.
… He's thinking about winning and thinking about making the right play instead of thinking about (things) like, ‘Am I doing good?’... Derrion is in the moment of what needs to be done to win.”
OU is now 1-1 and will host North Alabama, which is 2-0, at 7 p.m. Monday at Lloyd Noble Center on SEC Network+.

Oklahoma Gets A Needed Boost But Saturday Questions Still Linger
Oklahoma got a small but meaningful lift heading into the weekend with cornerback Eli Bowen and tight end Rocky Beers cleared off the injury report and available for the game against Florida. In a week when the availability list has been a moving target, getting those two back gives the Sooners a little more flexibility on both sides of the ball as they try to settle in before kickoff.
The bigger concern is what still remains unresolved. Wide receiver Elijah Thomas and defensive end Kenny Ozawalu are among the players listed as questionable, while eight others have already been ruled out and one more is doubtful, leaving Oklahoma with several late decisions still hanging over Saturday. The update helps, but it also underscores how much the Sooners are still managing as they head into a game where depth could matter just as much as the game plan. [Read more 🡒]
Oklahoma Gets A Needed Boost But One Florida Concern Remains
The Sooners are getting some reinforcements at a useful time, with several players set to return to the lineup for the upcoming game against Florida. Eli Bowen, Jake Maikkula, Jer'Michael Carter and Rocky Beers are all back in the mix, which should help Oklahoma add some much-needed depth as it tries to steady itself for a tricky SEC matchup.
Still, the availability report is not all encouraging. Ryan Fodje, Cole Sullivan and Jacobe Johnson have already been ruled out, and Peyton Bowen remains questionable, leaving one important spot in particular still worth watching as kickoff approaches. For Oklahoma, the returns are welcome, but there is still at least one Florida-related concern hanging over the week. [Read more 🡒]
Oklahoma Football Fans Wont Believe How One Playoff Spot Was Decided
When three Oklahoma high school football teams finished tied for third in District A-II-3, there was no film room, no points-differential debate and no last-second appeal left to sort it out. Liberty, Central Sallisaw and Gore had run through every available tiebreaker, and with only four playoff spots in the district, the decision came down to a coin toss at Catfish Round Up near Seminole.
Liberty and Central Sallisaw came out on top and moved on, while Gore was left out in the cold on the sports most old-school kind of margin. It is the sort of finish that reminds you just how thin the line can be in high school football, where a whole season can hinge on a flip once the usual math has been exhausted. [Read more 🡒]
