NORMAN, OK -
The University of Oklahoma is making waves with the addition of two seasoned coaches to its football program. Head coach Brent Venables announced the hiring of Deland McCullough as the new running backs coach and LaMar Morgan as the cornerbacks coach. Both bring a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the Sooners.
Venables' Vision for Success
Coach Venables couldn't be more thrilled with these hires, emphasizing the unique qualities both coaches bring to the table. "These are fantastic football coaches and great leaders," Venables shared.
"Their experience, knowledge, and ability to teach and lead will resonate with our players. Deland and LaMar stood out in our exhaustive search, and their impact will be felt immediately."
Venables highlighted that both coaches had numerous offers from other NFL and college teams but chose Oklahoma for its championship potential and prestigious environment.
McCullough's Running Back Expertise
Deland McCullough joins the Sooners with an impressive resume that spans the NFL and top college programs, including the Las Vegas Raiders, Notre Dame, USC, Indiana, and the Kansas City Chiefs. Known for his ability to develop elite running backs, McCullough's track record speaks for itself.
His recent success with the Raiders saw rookie Ashton Jeanty achieve 1,321 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns in 2025. Previously, McCullough played a crucial role in the Chiefs' journey to three consecutive AFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl victory.
Reflecting on his career, McCullough stated, "I've been blessed to coach at every level. Consistent development and production are key, and at Oklahoma, we're aiming to compete at the highest level in the SEC."
Morgan's Defensive Acumen
LaMar Morgan steps into his role with 14 years of coaching experience, most recently at Michigan as the defensive pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach. Venables praised Morgan’s football intelligence and relationship-driven approach, noting his energy and attention to detail.
At Michigan, Morgan helped the defense achieve impressive rankings, including 13 interceptions and a top-25 national finish in total defense. His previous stint as defensive coordinator at Louisiana showcased his ability to lead a defense known for takeaways and efficiency.
Morgan is eager to embrace the storied tradition of Oklahoma football, stating, "Joining a respected staff was crucial for me. I aim to be an elite teacher and transformational coach, fostering a strong brotherhood here."
Building on a Strong Foundation
Morgan will inherit a secondary that performed exceptionally well last season, ranking first in the SEC in defensive pass efficiency. The upcoming season promises excitement, particularly with an early matchup against Michigan, offering Morgan a chance to face his former team.
The Bottom Line
With the addition of McCullough and Morgan, the Sooners are poised for a dynamic season. Their expertise and leadership are set to elevate Oklahoma's game, reinforcing the program's commitment to excellence and championship aspirations.
