Prince Ijioma’s path to Oklahoma never really felt like a leap into the unknown.
The cornerback arrived in Norman with built-in familiarity: he grew up in Little Elm, Texas, just a couple hours from campus in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and he already knew several people inside the program. He and Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer were high school teammates, and Ijioma also had longstanding ties to defensive lineman Nigel Smith II and cornerback Eli Bowen.
That comfort level matters, especially for a transfer making the jump from Mississippi Valley State to the SEC. Ijioma spent two seasons at MVSU and turned himself into a standout for the Delta Devils in 2025, finishing his second college football season with 39 pass breakups and four pass breakups despite the team’s 2-9 record.
His connection to Oklahoma goes back years. Ijioma used to join Smith on visits to OU, when Smith was a 4-star prospect in the Class of 2024 and Ijioma was still unranked.
Oklahoma never offered him out of high school, but those unofficial visits gave him a relationship with the coaching staff that lasted. When he entered the transfer portal after the 2025 season, that history helped carry him all the way to a signing with the Sooners.
“I feel like I’m meant to be here, honestly,” Ijioma said in March.
Now he’s not just on the same roster as Smith - they’re roommates. Bowen has known Ijioma for years too, even if their bond isn’t as tight as the one Ijioma shares with Smith. Still, Bowen sees a defender who has clearly sharpened his game since arriving at the FCS level.
“I feel like he was always a great athlete, good ball skills, but I would say his football IQ is really good,” Bowen said. “Having experience really helps him understand what's going on and what other people are doing on the field and whatnot.”
The transition from the SWAC to the SEC is still a serious one, and Bowen didn’t pretend otherwise. But Oklahoma’s cornerback depth chart gives Ijioma room to grow before he’s asked to carry a major load.
Bowen and sophomore Courtland Guillory are projected as the Sooners’ starting corners in 2026, with senior Jacobe Johnson expected to be the top backup. Ijioma is one of two transfer cornerbacks added after the 2025 season, alongside former Oregon defensive back Dakoda Fields.
For now, Ijioma isn’t walking into Oklahoma under heavy pressure. But he believes he’s ready if the Sooners need him.
“I lead by example, and I have experience,” Ijioma said. “I know what I’m doing, in a way.”

Jackson Arnold and Michael Hawkins Jr. both spent time in the spotlight at Oklahoma, and now each is headed into a fresh start as a starter at a new program. Arnold has won the job at UNLV and is set to open the season against Memphis in Week 0, while Hawkins has emerged at West Virginia and is expected to take the first snaps when the Mountaineers open against Coastal Carolina.
