OU Football Stuns Fans with Major Coaching Additions

OU football strengthens coaching staff with notable additions of McCullough and Morgan, promising fresh expertise and dynamic leadership.

In a significant move for Oklahoma football, head coach Brent Venables announced the addition of Deland McCullough and LaMar Morgan to his staff. McCullough steps in as the running backs coach, bringing a wealth of experience from his recent stint with the Las Vegas Raiders. Meanwhile, Morgan takes on the role of cornerbacks coach after honing his skills with Michigan's defensive backs.

Venables couldn't contain his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m incredibly excited about the addition of two fantastic football coaches, great men, great leaders. Our players are going to love learning under them.” The search for these roles was thorough, and both McCullough and Morgan stood out with their extensive backgrounds and ability to connect with players and recruits.

Taking over from DeMarco Murray, who moved to the Kansas City Chiefs, McCullough is no stranger to the upper echelons of football. With a resume that includes stops at Indiana, USC, Notre Dame, and a previous tenure with the Chiefs, his reputation as a leader and motivator is well-earned.

Venables emphasized, “Deland has an impeccable reputation as a leader, a teacher and a motivator. His experience is exceptional.”

On the defensive side, Morgan fills the shoes of Jay Valai, now with the Buffalo Bills. Morgan's tenure at Michigan showcased his sharp football intellect and play-calling prowess.

Venables highlighted Morgan’s relationship-driven coaching style, noting his passion and energy as key attributes that will resonate with the players. “He’s tough and demanding, but the players are going to love his passion and energy,” Venables added.

With spring practices on the horizon, the Sooners are gearing up for an exciting new chapter under the guidance of these seasoned coaches.
