Oklahomas Ugly Opener Left One Bigger Concern Hanging Over The Backcourt

A shocking season opener defeat has Oklahoma regrouping as East Texas A&M takes center stage in a high-stakes matchup.

NORMAN - Oklahoma’s 2026-27 season opened with a jolt the Sooners wanted no part of, as East Texas A&M walked out of town with a 68-64 win on Monday.

The loss came despite a stronger second half from OU, which outscored the Lions 39-34 after halftime. But the damage was already done in a rough opening 20 minutes, and the Sooners never fully recovered.

Pop Isaacs paced Oklahoma with 15 points, while East Texas A&M’s Bo Aldridge topped everyone in the game with 22.

The numbers told the story of a team that spent too much of the night fighting itself. Oklahoma hit just 41 percent from the field, missed 15 free throws and turned it over 15 times.

The first half was especially ugly. OU went to the locker room trailing 34-25 after shooting 29.6 percent from the floor and making only two of 11 shots from beyond the arc.

The Sooners also left five points at the line, and nobody had reached double figures by halftime. Khani Rooths led the way with seven points in the opening half.

Even so, East Texas A&M didn’t exactly seize full control early. The Lions shot 38 percent in the first half and committed six turnovers, which kept Oklahoma close enough to make a comeback possible.

That comeback started slowly. East Texas A&M pushed the lead to 16 points early in the second half, but Oklahoma gradually found its footing. The Sooners tightened up defensively and began stringing together more efficient possessions, trimming the deficit possession by possession.

With five minutes left, OU had pulled even. But the Lions answered when the game was tied 60-60 with 2:51 remaining, ripping off a 6-0 run to go up 66-60 with 1:12 to play.

Isaacs helped keep the Sooners alive. After transferring to OU from Texas A&M during the offseason, he made one of two free throws with 1:07 left to cut it to 66-61, then finished a three-point play with 23 seconds remaining to make it a two-point game.

Oklahoma then went into foul mode, sending East Texas A&M to the line with 19 seconds left. Thomas Duchamp missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the Sooners a chance to steal the lead. But Tyler Hendricks and Derrion Reid both missed shots on the next trip down, and that opened the door for Aldridge to close it out.

Aldridge made both free throws to push the margin back to four and lock up the Lions’ win.

Oklahoma was also without point guard Xzayvier Brown, who missed the game with a lower-body injury. The Sooners announced his absence on X, formerly Twitter, just an hour before tipoff.

Brown started all 37 games for Oklahoma in 2025-26 after transferring from St. Joseph’s before that season. He averaged 15.4 points, 3.3 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game last year.

For now, his status remains unclear.

OU is 0-1 and will face Mississippi Valley State on Friday.

OUs Offensive Reset Now Hinges On One Huge Brent Venables Decision

Oklahomas offensive reset has already taken one major turn, with Ben Arbuckle out as offensive coordinator and Jason Witten now handling play-calling duties after the Sooners 4-4 start. The move signals how much urgency has built around an offense that has not found its footing, and it puts the spotlight squarely on Brent Venables as he tries to steady a season that has drifted off course.

The quarterback situation is part of the same conversation, with John Mateer coming off a rough stretch and Whitt Newbauer potentially in line for an opportunity, even though no official change has been announced. Beyond the immediate shuffle, the bigger question is where Oklahoma goes next on offense and who Venables ultimately trusts to help define that direction. [Read more 🡒]

Oklahoma Just Landed A Texas Legacy Fans Will Love

Oklahoma added an eye-catching name to its 2028 recruiting class when Logan Lokey, a four-star defensive lineman from Denton Guyer High School, announced his commitment. The son of former Texas defensive lineman Derek Lokey, he arrives with plenty of pedigree and plenty of attention, especially as an in-state recruit who had several major offers on the table.

What makes the decision stand out for Sooners fans is the school he passed over. Lokey is ranked No. 29 among defensive linemen in his class and has already made a strong impression at Denton Guyer, but Oklahoma beat out Texas and others to land him. For a program always looking to win key battles on the trail, getting a legacy recruit with Texas ties is the kind of early victory that tends to resonate. [Read more 🡒]

Oklahoma Faces Another Offensive Reset Under Brent Venables

Another offensive reset is underway in Norman, with Brent Venables moving on from Ben Arbuckle during his second season running the Oklahoma program. The change leaves the Sooners searching again for stability on that side of the ball, and it adds another layer to a coaching tenure that has already seen plenty of turnover.

Jason Witten has been named interim offensive coordinator, giving Oklahoma a temporary answer while Venables sorts out the longer-term plan. The next hire will be especially significant, because it will be the fourth full-time offensive coordinator of Venables six-year run with the Sooners, a sign of how hard it has been to find continuity on offense.
