Oklahoma’s defense is heading into 2026 with a familiar look at the center of it all: Kip Lewis and Owen Heinecke.
As the Sooners wrap up fall camp with the season less than two weeks away, the linebacker duo stands out as one of the biggest reasons this unit is getting so much attention. Oklahoma already brings back a defense that has a case as one of the best in the sport, and Lewis and Heinecke are right at the heart of that reputation.
Lewis has been a fixture for three seasons now, piling up 207 tackles, 18 tackles for loss and five sacks while helping drive Oklahoma’s defensive turnaround. Heinecke, meanwhile, went from walk-on to breakout performer in a hurry. After recording just 11 tackles over his first two seasons, he erupted for 74 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and three sacks last year.
The two have clearly found a working partnership, and Heinecke described it in simple terms on Friday.
"I like to think we're kind of yin and yang," Heinecke said via SoonerScoop's YouTube channel."I'm a little bit more levelheaded, composed, and he's, you know, all over the place, tracking, you know, 8,000 yards of practice cuz he's just pacing the field up and down the whole time."
That blend gives Brent Venables two proven linebackers to lean on. Both have shown they can make plays all over the field, and both bring the kind of experience and production Oklahoma wants in the middle of its defense.
If they keep producing at last season’s level, Oklahoma could have one of the SEC’s most dangerous linebacker pairings. And with the Sooners chasing another College Football Playoff run, that kind of stability could end up being a major asset.
