Oklahoma’s push to fix its rushing attack has turned up an unexpected name at the top of the running back pecking order.
The Sooners know what they need in 2026 if they want to back up last season and show they’re a real College Football Playoff contender: a run game that can hold up its end. That means more than just one back.
It takes a solid offensive line, a productive tight end room, a workable scheme and, of course, the right runners to make it all go. Oklahoma believes this year’s group is stronger in those areas than it was a season ago.
Still, the biggest surprise so far has been who’s getting the first crack at RB1.
Coming into the offseason, Tory Blaylock and Xavier Robinson looked like the most likely names to lead the room. Both were central to last year’s production, and there had also been some buzz around true freshman Jonathan Hatton Jr. But the back taking the most first-team reps right now is transfer Lloyd Avant.
“Lloyd Avant, transfer running back, has been getting running back one reps so far,” On3’s J.D. PicKell said on “The Hard Count.”
“That’s great. Two things I’m tracking, though.
One, who else pops up in that rotation with Avant to take carries... In addition to that, what does it look like when the pads come on?
Does that pecking order change at all?”
Avant didn’t arrive in Norman with the same spotlight as some of the other backs in the room, but he brings real production. He spent time at Colorado State and Tulsa, where he ran for 676 yards and six touchdowns over two seasons. His best-known skill, though, came on special teams.
In 2024, Avant led the American Conference with 28 yards per kickoff return, giving Oklahoma a useful weapon even before the competition for carries fully opened up.
Now, that profile has a chance to grow. If he keeps getting those first-team reps and carries that momentum into the deeper stages of fall camp, Oklahoma may have found another real answer in a backfield that already has several intriguing options.
For a team trying to get its ground game right, Avant’s rise may end up being one of the most important storylines of camp.
