After a tough home loss to Mississippi back in October, the path ahead for the Sooners was crystal clear: win out or watch the postseason from the couch. Head coach Brent Venables didn’t sugarcoat the stakes.
He framed the remainder of the season as a defining crossroads - respond with resilience or fade into the background. His team chose the former, and now, for the first time ever, Oklahoma is hosting a College Football Playoff game in Norman.
Venables acknowledged the significance of reaching this stage, but he didn’t dwell on it.
“There’s been some achievement in earning the opportunity to be in the position that we are,” he said. “But for us, we’re just getting started.”
That mindset has been the backbone of Oklahoma’s late-season surge. Since that October setback, every week has essentially been a playoff game. The Sooners have been living in that pressure cooker for months now, and it’s forged a team that’s battle-tested well before the official bracket was even set.
Venables’ belief in this group didn’t just materialize with the wins - it started long before the lights got bright. He pointed back to fall camp as the moment things began to click.

“We saw it in the way they practiced, the way they competed, the way they responded to coaching,” he said. “Things just kept coming together.”
And when it comes to big games, Oklahoma’s been here before - and they’ve delivered. Under Venables, the Sooners have taken down Alabama twice in three meetings, often stepping into those matchups as underdogs. But Venables has never been interested in that label.
“This is a game of earning it on the field,” he said. “Doing the hard things.
Being consistent. That’s what winning requires.”
He’s not leaning on past success either. Venables was quick to point out that what happened in previous matchups means nothing if the execution isn’t there tonight. Fundamentals, discipline, consistency - those are the pillars that will determine whether Oklahoma moves on or watches someone else celebrate on their home turf.
“That’s not coach speak,” he said. “That’s reality.”
Tonight marks a historic moment for Oklahoma football. The energy around Norman is electric, and for good reason.
But inside the walls of the program, it’s business as usual. Another playoff game.
