Oklahoma Stuns UT Arlington for Fifth Straight Victory Before SEC Play

Oklahoma Sooners surge into SEC play with momentum after defeating UT Arlington for their fifth consecutive win.

In Norman, the Oklahoma Sooners are riding high with their fifth straight win, showcasing their depth and talent on the mound. After sweeping Santa Clara, the No.

9 Sooners (15-2) took down UT Arlington 6-1 in a midweek matchup at Kimrey Family Stadium. Despite an early deficit, Oklahoma's pitching staff turned in a stellar performance, shutting down the Mavericks with a string of scoreless innings.

The Sooners' pitching strategy was on full display as they rotated through a lineup of arms. Michael Catalano kicked things off, and after a shaky start, he, along with Isaac Williams, Mason Bixby, Nate Smithburg, Trent Collier, and Xander Mercurius, kept UTA at bay. Mason Bixby was particularly impressive, striking out five of the six batters he faced to earn his first win of the season.

Head coach Skip Johnson couldn't hide his excitement about seeing Bixby and Smithburg in action again, noting their strong performances.

Offensively, Oklahoma found its spark in an unusual way. Jason Walk, breaking out of an early season slump, executed a thrilling straight steal of home in the second inning. Walk's aggressive play seemed to ignite the Sooners' bats, as he went on to tally two hits and three runs.

"Jason got us going when he stole home," Johnson remarked, highlighting the impact of Walk's daring play.

The Sooners took the lead in the fourth inning with RBI singles from Brendan Brock and Camden Johnson. Brock, who reached base four times, added a two-run double in the sixth, bringing his RBI total to a team-high 21 for the year. His flexibility in the lineup has been a boon for the team.

"We're just trying to switch things up," Johnson explained, noting the decision to move Brock to the leadoff spot due to Walk's struggles. "Brock's had a good year. He can really run and make things happen."

Deiten Lachance capped off the scoring with an RBI single in the sixth, extending the lead to 6-1. As they head into SEC play, the Sooners have won 15 of their 17 games, including this impressive five-game streak.

Brock emphasized the importance of getting some of the struggling players back on track, which bodes well for the upcoming conference challenges.

With a day off before hosting No. 22 Texas A&M, the Sooners are gearing up for what promises to be an intense series. Coach Johnson likened SEC weekends to a super regional, underscoring the level of competition they’re about to face.

Oklahoma's next test begins Friday night at Kimrey Family Stadium, with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. CT. The Sooners are ready to keep their momentum rolling as they dive into the heart of their season.
