Oklahoma's Next Five Games Will Decide If This Team Is Real

Oklahoma's grueling schedule tests their mettle as they strive to convert close calls into victories with five tough matchups remaining in the season.

Oklahoma’s 2026 season has been a strange blend of close calls, missed chances, and one huge answer when it mattered most. The Sooners are 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the SEC with five weeks left in the regular season, and that record has a lot of gray area wrapped around it.

There’s a real argument that OU could easily be sitting at 6-1 if a couple of late-game plays had gone the other way. The flipside is just as clear: Oklahoma also found a way to finish against Texas, pulling out a thrilling win by making the needed plays at the end. That’s been the story so far - not enough consistency, but just enough proof that the Sooners can still swing a game when it gets tight.

What makes the record harder to judge is the company Oklahoma has already kept. Through the first eight weeks of the season, the Sooners have faced the toughest schedule in the country, according to both ESPN’s Football Power Index and the Southeastern Conference.

That’s through Week 8, or nine weeks if Week 0 is included. No team has had a harder path so far.

That doesn’t magically fix the losses, and it doesn’t change the fact that Oklahoma sits with the 26th-highest strength of record in the nation. But it does add important context to where the Sooners stand right now. They’ve been tested more than anyone else, and the margin for error has already been razor thin.

The back half of the schedule isn’t getting any kinder. Oklahoma owns the 13th-highest remaining strength of schedule, with South Carolina, Florida, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and Missouri still ahead. That stretch follows the toughest run they’ve already faced: UTEP, Michigan, New Mexico, Georgia, Texas, Kentucky, and Mississippi State.

Brent Venables isn’t likely to let the schedule become the excuse. It’s more of a measuring stick - a chance for Oklahoma to show more than it has so far.

The Sooners haven’t played at a level that puts them among the nation’s top teams, and the offense in particular needs to be better. What’s on the scoreboard right now isn’t good enough for the win-loss column.

Still, with the season entering Week 9, Oklahoma’s place in the standings looks a little more complicated than the raw record suggests. The Sooners have earned a tougher read than a simple 4-3 snapshot.

Oklahoma May Need Caleb Nitta Sooner Than Anyone Expected

Oklahomas injury situation has quickly turned the lead-up to South Carolina into a test of depth, especially up front. The availability report lists 15 Sooners, and with Ryan Fodje and Eddy Pierre-Louis ruled out while Heath Ozaeta is expected back, the attention has shifted to the center spot, where Jake Maikkula is questionable after getting hurt.

If Maikkula cant go, Caleb Nitta could be called on earlier than the Sooners would like, and the staff seems comfortable with what they have behind him. Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle has praised Nittas preparation and intelligence, the sort of trust that matters most when the offensive line is being reshuffled on short notice. For a team already juggling injuries, the biggest concern now is whether Oklahoma can keep the middle of the line steady enough to avoid forcing even more adjustments. [Read more 🡒]
