Oklahoma’s momentum in the 2027 cycle is rolling right along, and the latest name to watch is Hutto, Texas, safety Jaiden Fields.
The Sooners have already built the No. 4 class in Rivals’ rankings after landing defensive backs Trenton Blaylock and Bode Sparrow over the past couple of weeks. Now they’re gaining ground with another defensive back, as Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman predicted Fields to Oklahoma on Sunday, and SoonerScoop.com’s Josh McCuistion followed with the same call on Monday.
Fields is a two-way standout at Hutto, in the Austin-Round Rock area, where he lines up at both wide receiver and safety for the Hippos. That versatility shows up quickly on film. He looks like a true playmaker, with the kind of speed and athletic pop that jumps out immediately.
Oklahoma is recruiting him as a safety, and the fit makes sense. Fields has the ball skills and spacing awareness to project as a natural free safety.
He reads the action well, takes sound angles in both coverage and run support, and brings a physical edge as a wrap-up tackler. He also shows patience in his run fits and stays active in zone coverage, where he can disrupt routes and passing concepts.
His speed at receiver only adds to the appeal. That burst should help him hold up against faster college wideouts when he’s asked to cover them on defense.
Fields has collected 15 Power Four offers, and the Sooners are in the mix with Stanford, Texas A&M, SMU, and TCU for his commitment.
Oklahoma already has a solid group at safety, but the room beyond Peyton Bowen is young and inexperienced. There’s talent there, and Fields would have a chance to compete for a role in Brent Venables’ secondary if he signs with the Sooners.

National Analyst Just Put Danny Okoye In Oklahomas Spotlight
Danny Okoye has spent his first two seasons at Oklahoma in a limited rotational role, flashing just enough to keep his name in the conversation without forcing his way into the spotlight. Through that stretch, the defensive end has produced six tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks, the kind of modest early rsum that still leaves plenty of room for projection when the traits are obvious and the runway opens up.
Now the Sooners have a little more reason to look his way, with a vacancy in the EDGE rotation and a developmental defender who keeps drawing attention from national analysts for his athletic profile. David Pollack is among those noting Okoyes upside, but the real question for Oklahoma is whether the talent turns into reliable snaps and consistent disruption when the opportunity finally gets bigger. Sooners Came Uncomfortably Close In Another Major Texas Recruiting Battle
Oklahoma spent the spring trying to make up ground with Brandon Sherrard, and the late effort was real enough to put the Sooners back in the mix for one of the better defensive backs in the 2027 class. The four-star corner from Texas had offers from a long list of major programs, and Oklahomas push included an offer in May and an official visit shortly after, giving the Sooners a legitimate shot in a battle that also drew LSU and others.
Instead, another Texas recruiting fight went the other way, leaving Oklahoma to keep building around other targets in the class. Sherrards profile made him the kind of addition that could have changed the shape of OUs cornerback group, so his decision is another reminder of how thin the margins can be when the Sooners go head-to-head with the Longhorns for elite in-state talent.
