Oklahoma WR Room Thins Out as Josiah Martin, KJ Daniels Enter Transfer Portal
The reshaping of Oklahoma’s wide receiver room continues, as two more names are set to hit the transfer portal. Reserve wideouts Josiah Martin and KJ Daniels have both announced their intentions to transfer when the NCAA window officially opens Friday.
Martin, who transferred into the program from Cal just last offseason, shared his decision via social media after first informing ESPN. Daniels, a redshirt freshman who arrived as part of OU’s 2024 recruiting class, also made his announcement public online.
Both players will have three years of eligibility remaining at their next stop - a key detail for programs looking to add long-term depth at the position.
Martin’s Short Stay in Norman
Martin came to Oklahoma as part of a major offseason overhaul at wide receiver. The Denton, Texas native was one of five wideouts brought in through the portal to bolster a group that had been looking for more consistency and explosiveness.
At Cal, Martin showed flashes as a true freshman - appearing in nine games, catching 12 passes for 112 yards, and even adding a rushing touchdown. His speed and ability to work from the slot made him an intriguing developmental piece for the Sooners.
But in Norman, Martin never found his footing. He saw action in just two games this season - brief stints against Temple and Kent State - totaling only 15 snaps. For his college career, he’s logged 151 snaps across 11 appearances, primarily working from the slot.
Daniels Departs Without Seeing the Field
KJ Daniels’ time in Norman was quieter. The 5-foot-9, 165-pound receiver out of Franklinton, Louisiana, didn’t appear in a game during his two seasons with the Sooners. He came in as a three-star prospect, ranked No. 88 among receivers in the 2024 class, and was viewed as a developmental player with speed and upside.
But with a crowded receiver room and limited opportunities, Daniels never cracked the rotation. Now, he’ll look for a fresh start elsewhere - with three full years of eligibility to work with.
A Position Group in Motion
Martin and Daniels are the third and fourth wide receivers to exit the program this fall, joining Jayden Gibson and walk-on Jakeb Snyder. Gibson, once a promising contributor, saw his career derailed by back-to-back season-ending knee injuries and entered the portal midseason. Snyder announced his departure earlier this week.
The timing of these moves isn’t surprising. The NCAA’s winter transfer portal window opens Friday and runs through January 16. It’s a tight, two-week period where players can officially enter their names into the database and explore new opportunities.
For Oklahoma, these departures further signal a transition at wide receiver. Whether it’s through recruiting, the portal, or internal development, the Sooners will need to reload and retool a room that’s seen its fair share of turnover in recent months.
As for Martin and Daniels, both still have time and eligibility on their side - and now, a chance to find a better fit where they can get on the field and make an impact.
