Oklahoma Just Made The Move Fans Knew This Offense Needed

In a dramatic shake-up, Oklahoma's football team has parted ways with their offensive coordinator, thrusting Jason Witten into the spotlight to revive an ailing offense.

Oklahoma is making a change on offense.

Ben Arbuckle has been fired as the Sooners’ offensive coordinator, according to multiple reports Monday, one day after OU’s attack sputtered again in a 42-25 home loss to South Carolina. According to SoonerScoop, tight ends coach Jason Witten will take over playcalling duties.

The move comes with Oklahoma sitting at 4-4 and still searching for answers on that side of the ball. The Sooners head to Florida in Week 10 ranked 111th nationally in total offense and 108th in scoring. Against the Gamecocks, OU managed only 118 yards and three points through three quarters.

Arbuckle, who came to Norman after serving as Washington State’s offensive coordinator, was in his second season leading the Sooners’ offense. His contract was worth $1.5 million per year and was scheduled to run through the end of the 2027 season. He took over after the 2024 season, when Seth Littrell was fired.

Brent Venables wasn’t ready to discuss any staff changes after the loss.

"Yeah, I'm not talking about anything like that," Venables said.

Arbuckle, meanwhile, took the blame for the offense’s struggles.

"I own it. I'm not mad at any of those players," Arbuckle said. "If I'm frustrated at anybody it's with myself because I didn't have them ready to come out and play their A-game.”

The problems have piled up in multiple spots. Injuries have hit an offensive line that brought back five players who started games for Oklahoma last season, and the Sooners are ranked 13th out of 16 SEC teams in yards per game. The running game has also been stuck near the bottom of the national rankings, sitting 119th.

But the biggest issue under Arbuckle showed up at quarterback. Fifth-year player John Mateer, who Arbuckle brought with him from the Cougars, has not produced at the level expected.

He struggled most of Saturday, missing open receivers and finishing 26 of 43 for 244 yards and two touchdowns. Mateer is 65th nationally with a 139.7 passer rating.

"Tentative," Arbuckle said Saturday about Mateer’s performance. “He's the main one I was talking about right there.

Just not pulling the trigger on some things. Maybe getting a little too greedy on some things.”

Witten, a 44-year-old former NFL star who joined Oklahoma’s staff this offseason as tight ends coach, will now handle the playcalling for the final four games, starting with Saturday’s trip to Florida. The game is set for 6:45 p.m. CT on SEC Network.

Under Arbuckle this season, Oklahoma’s offense averaged 354.3 yards per game, ranked 92nd nationally. The Sooners averaged 26.2 points per game, ranked 79th, while the passing game sat at 235.8 yards per game, 60th nationally, and the rushing attack at 118.5 yards per game, 113th.

OU Fans Now Face A Brutal Offensive Staff Reality

The loss to South Carolina laid bare how quickly the mood around Oklahoma can turn when the defense slips and the offense cannot cover for it. A 42-25 defeat after a season in which the Sooners had leaned on strong defensive play left the team staring at a finished College Football Playoff chase, while junior wide receiver Ivan Carreon at least gave the offense a bright spot with a career-high two touchdowns.

Now the attention shifts to what comes next for an offense under coordinator Ben Arbuckle that has ranked poorly nationally and has fueled plenty of talk about possible staff changes. Brent Venables did not confirm anything after the game, but the uncertainty around the offensive side is hard to ignore, especially with the season's bigger goals already out of reach. [Read more 🡒]

Oklahoma Just Took A Major Backcourt Hit Before Paris

A promising piece of Oklahomas backcourt depth has been knocked out before the Sooners even get to Paris. Sophomore guard Keeley Parks suffered a non-contact knee injury in practice and will miss the 2026-27 season, a tough blow for a program that had been counting on her development heading into the new year.

Parks is still scheduled to undergo surgery after the teams trip to France, and the Sooners have made clear theyll be around her through the recovery process. For Jennie Baranczyks group, the timing is especially rough with an overseas trip ahead, and it leaves Oklahoma to adjust its guard rotation while Parks begins a long rehab road back. [Read more 🡒]

Oklahoma Is Finally Making An Offensive Change Fans Saw Coming

After two seasons of uneven production, Oklahoma appears ready to make a change on offense. Reports indicate the Sooners are expected to part ways with offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, whose unit has struggled to generate points and total yards at a level that matches the programs expectations.

The move comes after a stretch of recent offensive frustration that left fans bracing for exactly this kind of shake-up. Oklahoma is expected to turn to an interim offensive coordinator for the rest of the season, a sign the staff is trying to steady things quickly while the program sorts out what comes next.
