Oklahoma Just Made A Staff Move That Could Matter On Saturdays

OU bolsters its football program with the strategic hiring of Justin Smith, fresh from North Carolina State, to lead their athletic training staff.

OU football has a new leader in its training room.

The program announced Friday that Justin Smith has been hired as the Sooners’ head athletic trainer for football, replacing Jonathan Gress, who left after one season to join the Tennessee Titans’ staff after previously working for the New Orleans Saints.

Smith comes to Norman after 12 seasons at North Carolina State, where he served as the head football athletic trainer. He has also worked for Appalachian State, NFL Europe and Miles College.

OU head football coach Brent Venables said in a statement, “We’re super excited to welcome Justin Smith to our program as head football athletic trainer. He brings tremendous wisdom and experience in the medical space and is one of the absolute best in his field.

On top of his communication and consistency, he intimately understands the rhythm and cadence of football players’ year-round schedules, and he’s a relationship-driven person. That’s extremely important in our football program here at Oklahoma.

We’re incredibly happy he and his family are Sooners.”

After dealing with a rash of injuries in 2024, OU overhauled its training staff with Gress and a new head nutritionist, Abigail O’Connor, who was hired from Michigan in July. The Sooners now turn to Smith to help carry forward the work of Gress and keep the athletes moving in tandem with a new head nutritionist, Abigail O’Connor, who was hired from Michigan in July.

David Stone Just Raised Expectations For Oklahoma Freshman Tank Carrington

For Oklahomas defensive front, the early buzz around true freshman James Tank Carrington is starting to sound less like camp chatter and more like a real depth-chart conversation. David Stone has been one of the voices pointing it out, praising Carringtons football IQ, his technical skill and the way he already processes the game like someone who has been around longer than a first-year player.

Stones biggest takeaway is the part that usually decides whether a young lineman gets on the field or not: Carrington can recognize blocks and use his hands well, but the next step is putting those flashes together with more consistency. Even so, the confidence level around him is clearly rising, and with Stone comparing him favorably to others in the room, Carrington looks like a freshman whose role could grow faster than expected. Jason Wittens Praise Puts Oklahoma TE Battle In Focus

Trynae Washington barely saw the field during his true freshman season in 2025, but the Oklahoma tight end still managed to leave an impression in a room that has gotten a lot more crowded. After redshirting, Washington spent the year developing behind the scenes, and new tight ends coach Jason Witten has singled him out for his work ethic, physical development and long-term potential heading into the next season.

Jason Wittens praise matters because the Sooners have brought in several new tight ends through the transfer portal and recruiting, raising the level of competition in the room for 2026. Washington now has a chance to turn a quiet first year into something more meaningful, but he will have to hold off a deeper group if he wants to carve out a real role. [Read more 🡒]
