Oklahoma may have dodged the worst-case scenario against Michigan, but the bigger concern came later: Kip Lewis is expected to “miss some time,” and that could leave a real crack in the Sooners’ defense.
Lewis barely got through the game. Pro Football Focus listed him for 10 snaps, though the reality looked even uglier.
He appeared to suffer a serious right knee injury, tried to return, and only lasted a few more snaps before leaving for good. Afterward, Brent Venables said he didn’t know the full extent of the injury, only that Lewis would be out for a while.
That matters because Lewis isn’t just another starter. He’s a captain and one of Oklahoma’s best defenders, and linebacker has been the thinnest spot on that side of the ball all along.
Losing a key player there is one thing. Losing Lewis from a unit that has the least margin for error is something else entirely.
Venables pointed to the defense’s response after the injury as a reason for some optimism.
"Lose a guy like Kip. I mean, he's a good player," Venables said after the game.
"But I thought the other guys came in, and we reestablished a rhythm, especially in the second half. Seventy-five yards on 25 plays.
So did a lot of good things to make that happen."
Oklahoma’s defense is still the team’s strength, and Venables has built enough depth over five seasons to survive injuries better than most. But this one could be tougher to absorb than usual.
The Sooners have already seen what happens when linebacker depth gets tested, and the memory of Ryan Reynolds’ 2008 Red River injury still hangs over situations like this. That day, an OU lead turned into a loss, and the team needed weeks before Mike Balogun finally emerged as a solution.
This time, Oklahoma doesn’t have weeks to figure it out.
James Nesta was the first man up after Lewis went down, and in 27 snaps he graded as the sixth-highest defensive player on the team. Owen Heinecke shifted to the WILL spot, while Cole Sullivan handled the MIKE reps. But both players came out of the game with plenty to clean up.
Heinecke finished with a team-high 10 tackles and a sack against Michigan, yet the missed tackles stood out. Venables even pointed to a missed tackle for loss by Nesta and Heinecke after Mateer’s fourth-quarter interception.
"Kip's an emotional and on-the-field leader, but the expectation is there's no drop-off,'' Heinecke said. "I think Nesta did a good job with stepping up in that situation.
Obviously there's gonna be a lot to learn from and get better. But credit to Nesta and praying for Kip.
Hoping that he's feeling alright."
Sullivan’s day was quieter, and not in a good way. He had one tackle in his return to Ann Arbor, and that’s not enough for a defense trying to hold its standard.
"Losing a guy like Kip is huge, it's a huge loss," Sullivan said. "We obviously didn't play a perfect game.
There were some more plays to be made out there. We have to get better from that.
We're going to see how long Kip is going to be out. So, we just have to prepare."
There’s confidence inside the building that the Sooners can handle the next man up. Nesta looks like a player with a bright future, even if that future has arrived faster than anyone expected.
But if Oklahoma wants to keep the defense playing to its level, Heinecke and Sullivan have to raise theirs quickly. There isn’t much room for anything less.
