College football will get rolling earlier than usual for Oklahoma in 2027, and that may end up being more than just a quirky calendar note.
On Wednesday, the Sooners announced a pair of schedule changes: Utah State has been added for Saturday, Aug. 28, and the SMU game has been pushed up to Saturday, Sept. 4. That move puts Oklahoma into Week 0 for the first time in program history, giving Brent Venables and his team something that can matter later far more than it does in late August.
A Week 0 opener creates an extra bye week deeper into the season, and for Oklahoma that could be a real edge once the grind of the SEC schedule sets in. Starting a week early also means the Sooners will probably open fall camp a week sooner than normal, so they do not lose any practice time in the process.
Oklahoma’s 2027 slate now includes Utah State on Aug. 28, SMU on Sept. 4 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Alabama, Arkansas, at Auburn, at LSU, Missouri, at Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas in Dallas, and at Vanderbilt.
The added off week may look minor in August, but it could loom large by the time the season reaches its hardest stretch. Oklahoma is heading into its first nine-game SEC schedule in 2026, and the Sooners will get only one bye that year.
At least that break lands in a useful spot, wedged between a trip to Georgia on Sept. 26 and the Red River Rivalry against Texas on Oct. 10.
Even so, the 2026 schedule is loaded early. The Sooners could be staring at three top-15 games in their first five, with Michigan also on the list, and then they’ll have to navigate eight straight conference games without a pause. Unlike some other SEC teams, Oklahoma did not pad the calendar with an FCS opponent in November to create a makeshift breather.
That is why the 2027 setup matters. The season will still be brutal no matter how the rest of the schedule fills out, but a Week 0 start gives Oklahoma a chance to bank an extra recovery week in the middle of the gauntlet instead of burning it before the season even feels real. In a league this unforgiving, that can be the kind of margin that keeps a key player on the field for a game that actually counts.
So far, the 2027 Week 0 slate includes 12 games, and only two of them are Power 4 vs. Power 4 matchups. LSU is the only other SEC program with a Week 0 game on the books.
Oklahoma also said it is still searching for a third non-conference opponent for 2027 to go with Utah State and SMU. The Sooners had been set to host San Diego State next year, but that arrangement is no longer in place. A marquee replacement does not appear likely, though, since SMU already fills the required Power 4 spot on the schedule.
