Kamieon Compton-Nero may still be the Oklahoma lean, but the race for the top in-state recruit in the 2028 class is far from over, and SEC heavyweights are making sure the Sooners feel it.
The Owasso High School standout remains the best prospect in Oklahoma, according to the 247Sports Composite, where he’s ranked as the No. 45 overall player and a four-star athlete. Oklahoma has long been viewed as the favorite to keep him home, but no commitment is in place yet, and the Sooners’ conference neighbors have kept pushing hard while OU sits at 2-2.
Compton-Nero transferred across town to Owasso for his junior season and is the kind of two-way force college staffs love to chase. As a sophomore at Rejoice Christian School, he put up 3,335 passing yards and 49 touchdowns at quarterback. He’s expected to end up at safety for Oklahoma, though his production on defense was just as loud: 95 tackles, five interceptions and three pick-sixes.
The visits have only sharpened the picture. Every stop he’s made this season seems to have come with a team putting its best foot forward, and Alabama and Ole Miss both made strong cases in front of him over the last two weeks.
Compton-Nero was in Tuscaloosa when Alabama rolled past South Carolina 49-18 to move to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in SEC play. Afterward, he made it clear he plans to return.

Ole Miss may have topped that. The Rebels hosted LSU in a primetime showdown that brought ESPN College GameDay to Oxford, and they backed it up with a 32-24 win over Lane Kiffin’s former team. For a recruit soaking in the atmosphere, it was the kind of night that sticks.
“Can’t thank the coaches enough for the belief I can be THAT GUY to keep what I got to see last night going. Never experienced anything like that,” he wrote in a post.
Compton-Nero still has a full slate of trips ahead: SMU on Oct. 3, Oklahoma on Oct.
10, Texas Tech on Oct. 17, LSU on Nov. 7 and Notre Dame on Nov.
- The Sooners do have the benefit of getting him on campus twice, but that next visit is for the Red River Rivalry against No.
1 Texas in Dallas.
That could be a tricky backdrop for Oklahoma if the Sooners keep playing the way they have in their last three games. It would also be the first time this season that Compton-Nero would see a team he’s visiting fall short of the moment.
He’s been predicted to land at Oklahoma since July, but with that many visits still on the schedule, this recruitment looks like it has plenty of life left. He also hasn’t publicly trimmed his top 15 since announcing it in July, and that keeps the door open for others to keep chipping away.
Being the home-state program still gives Oklahoma a built-in edge. But right now, that alone may not be enough, especially with other schools finding ways to impress while the Sooners search for something stronger to sell.
