Oklahoma Gets One Big Defensive Boost As Line Questions Linger

The Sooners receive a boost with Peyton Bowen's return while other key players face uncertain status ahead of their clash with South Carolina.

Oklahoma got a lift Friday when the SEC availability report pointed toward safety Peyton Bowen being ready for Saturday’s game against South Carolina.

Bowen was upgraded to probable, a strong sign he could be back on the field for the Gamecocks matchup. He had been listed as questionable on earlier reports this week after missing the final two defensive possessions in Oklahoma’s 23-15 win over Mississippi State. Bowen was hit in the right leg by a Bulldog receiver after his end zone interception and return, and he later said after the game that he was "just chillin'" and dealing with "a little stinger."

The report also gave a mixed update on Bowen’s family connection in the secondary. Eli Bowen was downgraded to doubtful after being a late addition to the SEC availability report before the Texas game. He went through warmups that day but was not available by kickoff, and he has now missed the last two games with an ankle injury.

There was more movement elsewhere on Oklahoma’s injury list. Running back Xavier Robinson was taken off the report entirely, which makes him available.

Center Jake Maikkula stayed on the report as questionable after leaving late in the second half against Mississippi State. He spent two possessions in the trainers’ tent before returning to the sideline, and Caleb Nitta handled the finish at center.

The Sooners also ruled out pass catcher Elijah Thomas, who has sat out the last two weeks since getting hurt in the loss to Kentucky. Left tackle Fred Hinton was downgraded to out as well.

Heath Ozaeta, meanwhile, was removed from the report last weekend and again after Thursday’s report. He was officially available against Mississippi State but did not play, though he wore a large wrap on the ankle he injured during pregame of the Red River Rivaly. Ozaeta played the full game but then missed the next two weeks while dealing with the injury.

Saturday’s game between Oklahoma and South Carolina is set for 3:15 p.m. at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium and will be shown on SEC Network.

Oklahoma’s report listed Ryan Fodje, Dakoda Fields, Trell Harris, Taylor Heim, Fred Hinton, Jacobe Johnson, Eddy Pierre-Louis, Cole Sullivan, and Elijah Thomas as out; Eli Bowen as doubtful; Jake Maikkula as questionable; and Peyton Bowen as probable.

South Carolina’s report listed Dayne Arnett, Kobby Sakhi-Prah, Jayden Sellers, Seth Smith, Josiah Thompson, Jawarn Howell, and Quay’sheed Scott as out.

Two Former Sooners Are Already Turning Heads In The NFL

Two former Sooners are already making an early impression in the NFL, and both have landed on a list that tends to get attention around the league. Through the first seven weeks of the 2026 season, Pro Football Focus ranked Atlanta Falcons linebacker Kendal Daniels fifth among the top 15 highest-graded rookies, while Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Robert Spears-Jennings checked in seventh.

Daniels has climbed back into the mix after returning from injury, and his 77.7 overall grade shows how quickly he has settled in once healthy. Spears-Jennings has been steady enough to stay in that conversation as well, with his grades in each game consistently landing above 60.0, a sign that both rookies are already giving their new teams something to build on. B.J. Edwards Gives Oklahoma A Huge Opener Boost Amid Ongoing Fight

B.J. Edwards gave Oklahoma an important lift before the season even tipped off, after a Cleveland County judge granted him a temporary restraining order that makes him eligible for the Sooners opener. The guard had been sidelined by a legal dispute over the NCAAs Five-for-Five Rule, but the ruling clears the way for him to take part as Oklahoma gets its first look at the new season.

Edwards is also part of a broader challenge to the NCAAs policy, joining other athletes as plaintiffs in a case centered on players from the high school graduating class of 2022. For Oklahoma, the immediate impact is simple: a veteran guard is back in the mix for opening night, even as the larger fight over eligibility continues to play out in court. [Read more 🡒]

Oklahoma Faces New Week 9 Concern South Carolina Can Exploit

Oklahoma heads into Week 9 with its injury report carrying real weight, especially up front. The Sooners are already down offensive linemen Eddy Pierre-Louis and Ryan Fodje, while center Jake Maikkula is listed as questionable, leaving the staff to sort through replacement options before facing South Carolina.

The concern does not stop there. Defensive back Eli Bowen is doubtful, and Peyton Bowen is probable to suit up, but the bigger issue is how the offensive line situation could affect Oklahomas ability to handle pressure and stay on schedule. Against a South Carolina defense looking for any opening, that uncertainty is the kind of development the Sooners would rather not be managing this late in the week. [Read more 🡒]
