John Mateer’s first half against Georgia had Oklahoma fans asking the same blunt question: how much longer can this go on?
The Sooners’ quarterback entered the game already under pressure after a rough stretch that included a loss to Michigan in Week 2 and a narrow escape against lowly New Mexico at home last week. Then came a first half in Athens that poured gasoline on every complaint.
Mateer finished the opening two quarters 15 of 19 for 139 yards with an interception, but the numbers don’t tell the full story. He was also sacked three times, lost two momentum-swinging fumbles, and one of those was returned all the way for a Georgia touchdown.
He didn’t give Oklahoma anything on the ground, either. The Sooners managed just two drives of six that went beyond 20 yards, and both of those possessions ended in turnovers.
By halftime, Georgia was ahead 28-0, and Oklahoma’s offense looked stuck in place.
Fans made their frustration plain on X. “This is insane … .this week to week with Mateer I’m done,” one wrote. Another posted, “John Mateer the kinda QB that makes you stop watching football and become more productive in real life,” while a third said, “If Oklahoma doesn’t bench John Mateer, they’re not a serious program,”
The pile-on kept growing from there: “Mark Sanchez… we’re good bro John Mateer is here.” And another fan added, “Can someone please pack his dorm room up for him?”
There’s no question Oklahoma was walking into a brutal spot against a dominant Georgia team on the road, but that’s little comfort to a fan base that’s already seen enough. Brent Venables may not have much wiggle room if this keeps up, especially with Texas, Kentucky and Mississippi State waiting after next week’s bye. If the Sooners don’t turn things around fast, their College Football Playoff hopes could be gone before Halloween.
