Oklahoma’s Week 9 injury picture is once again crowded, and the biggest questions are clustered where the Sooners can least afford them: along the offensive line and in the secondary.
The list already includes several players who are definitely out, plus a few key names hanging in the balance as kickoff approaches against South Carolina. For a team that has been dealing with this kind of churn all season, the uncertainty is becoming part of the weekly routine.
The most pressing concern is at center, where Jake Maikkula is listed as questionable after leaving the Mississippi State game in the second half and not returning. He missed Week 1 as well, though South Carolina presents a much tougher test than UTEP ever did.
Western Kentucky transfer Caleb Nitta stepped in last week and handled his first extended run as a Sooner well enough that he appears to be the leading option if Maikkula cannot play. Ryan Fodje would normally be the next man up at center, and Noah Best has also handled that spot before, but Nitta may have earned his first start in Oklahoma’s offense.
The guard spots are also in flux. Eddy Pierre-Louis is out for the fourth straight week after opening the season as the starter at left guard, and Ryan Fodje will miss a second consecutive game after being injured just as Michael Fasusi returned at left tackle.
Pierre-Louis has likely lost his starting role, but his absence still matters because Oklahoma keeps needing bodies up front. The Sooners do at least get Heath Ozaeta back this week, which helps stabilize the group.
Freshman Noah Best is expected to start at guard if he is not needed at center, while Ozaeta or Peyton Joseph could fill the other side. Fodje’s absence leaves another opening, whether that means right tackle or right guard, depending on how the rest of the line is arranged.
There’s also a concern in the secondary with Eli Bowen, who is doubtful after being on the injury report for the past four weeks. A return is possible, but not likely. In his absence, sophomore Trystan Haynes has already taken on a bigger role and has stepped up.
On the defensive side, Peyton Bowen is in a much better spot than his brother. The strong safety is probable after getting banged up in the fourth quarter against Mississippi State, and his availability matters plenty given how important he has been as a Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist. If he were to be limited, Michael Boganowski could be the one to slide back into the lineup after losing the free safety job to Omarion Robinson.
Other Sooners listed out are LB Taylor Heim, WR Trell Harris, TE Trynae Washington, CB Jacobe Johnson, CB Dakoda Fields, WR Elijah Thomas, LB Cole Sullivan and OL Fred Hinton.

Two Former Sooners Are Already Turning Heads In The NFL
Two former Sooners are already making an early impression in the NFL, and both have landed on a list that tends to get attention around the league. Through the first seven weeks of the 2026 season, Pro Football Focus ranked Atlanta Falcons linebacker Kendal Daniels fifth among the top 15 highest-graded rookies, while Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Robert Spears-Jennings checked in seventh.
Daniels has climbed back into the mix after returning from injury, and his 77.7 overall grade shows how quickly he has settled in once healthy. Spears-Jennings has been steady enough to stay in that conversation as well, with his grades in each game consistently landing above 60.0, a sign that both rookies are already giving their new teams something to build on. B.J. Edwards Gives Oklahoma A Huge Opener Boost Amid Ongoing Fight
B.J. Edwards gave Oklahoma an important lift before the season even tipped off, after a Cleveland County judge granted him a temporary restraining order that makes him eligible for the Sooners opener. The guard had been sidelined by a legal dispute over the NCAAs Five-for-Five Rule, but the ruling clears the way for him to take part as Oklahoma gets its first look at the new season.
Edwards is also part of a broader challenge to the NCAAs policy, joining other athletes as plaintiffs in a case centered on players from the high school graduating class of 2022. For Oklahoma, the immediate impact is simple: a veteran guard is back in the mix for opening night, even as the larger fight over eligibility continues to play out in court. [Read more 🡒]
Oklahoma Gets One Big Defensive Boost As Line Questions Linger
The latest SEC availability report brought a little relief for Oklahoma on the defensive side, with safety Peyton Bowen listed as probable for the upcoming game against South Carolina. That matters for a unit trying to stay steady as the Sooners continue sorting through a few injury questions elsewhere, including the status of his brother Eli Bowen and center Jake Maikkula.
Up front, the picture is less settled. Left tackle Fred Hinton has been ruled out, while running back Xavier Robinson is back on the available list after being removed from the report, giving Oklahoma at least one piece of good news on offense. The full report still leaves several moving parts to monitor, and the line remains the spot where the Sooners are waiting for clearer answers. [Read more 🡒]
