Oklahoma Closing In On A Huge In-State Recruiting Win

Top recruit Kamieon Compton-Nero has sparked excitement by setting a commitment date for Friday the 13th, with experts anticipating a decision that could bolster Oklahoma's future.

Oklahoma’s pursuit of Kamieon Compton-Nero is headed for a Friday the 13th finish.

The top in-state recruit in the 2028 class announced Tuesday that he has set his commitment date for Friday, Nov. 13, and he trimmed his choices to a final five of Oklahoma, Alabama, Ole Miss, Notre Dame and SMU. Compton-Nero, a two-way athlete projected to end up at defensive back for the Sooners, will make his decision from that group.

That list is a long way from where things stood in early August, when Compton-Nero first unveiled 15 schools and then began working through a round of game-day visits. Since then, he has crossed off Oklahoma State, LSU, Missouri, Florida, Oregon, Michigan, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Kansas State and Tennessee.

Even before the pool got that small, Oklahoma looked like the destination. Multiple recruiting experts had already predicted he would land with the Sooners, and Rivals still gives OU a 93.6% chance to win the battle. Ole Miss is next at 1.8%.

The Sooners also have the kind of visit trail that usually leaves a mark. Compton-Nero was in Norman for the season-opening blowout of UTEP, then showed up again in Dallas for Oklahoma’s upset of No.

1 Texas in the Red River Rivalry. OU is the only program he has visited twice this season, and his six total visits are more than any other school has received from him.

That said, other programs made their push. He watched Alabama roll past South Carolina 49-18 in Tuscaloosa, and he was also there when Ole Miss beat LSU in Lane Kiffin’s return to Oxford.

No matter how the final decision breaks, Compton-Nero would be the highest-rated addition in Oklahoma’s 2028 class. The 247Sports Composite lists him as the No. 43 overall player and the No. 2 athlete, making him a consensus four-star recruit.

He has also backed up the hype on the field this season after transferring from Rejoice Christian School to Owasso High School to compete at the highest level of prep football in Oklahoma. Through seven games, according to MaxPreps, he has 22 tackles and an interception on defense. On offense, after moving from quarterback to wide receiver, he has caught 45 passes for 421 yards and four touchdowns.

Compton-Nero attends Owasso (OK) and is rated the No. 1 player in the state.

If he picks Oklahoma, he would join a 2028 class that already includes five commits: tight end Connor Arant, linebacker Jay Schell, quarterback Trey Tagliaferri, defensive lineman Logan Lokey and wide receiver.

Oklahoma Defense Suddenly Has A Brent Venables Problem

Oklahomas defense took a jarring step backward in the loss to South Carolina, surrendering 521 total yards in a game Brent Venables called uncharacteristically poor. The Sooners were exposed in the basics, most notably in space, where missed tackles piled up and the unit never found the kind of edge it usually tries to bring under Venables.

The tackling issues were especially hard to ignore because they cut across the entire defense, with 25 misses showing up on the film and linebacker Kip Lewis among the players hit hardest by the grading. Even with the offense getting a lift from Ivan Carreons career-high 88 yards and two touchdowns, the defensive breakdowns left Oklahoma with a much bigger concern to sort through moving forward. OU's Record Looks Different Once You See What They've Faced

The first College Football Playoff rankings of 2026 offered a reminder that Oklahomas record has to be viewed through the lens of who the Sooners have been playing. A 4-4 start looks ordinary on paper, but the schedule has been anything but, with seven ranked opponents on the slate and several of the sports heavyweights already on the resume.

Georgia, Texas and Ole Miss are part of the list of top-25 teams Oklahoma has already faced, which helps explain why this season has been so difficult to read from the standings alone. The Sooners came in with preseason expectations of being much better positioned, but with the CFP picture already looking remote, the bigger question now is whether they can steady themselves enough to finish with a winning record against what remains. Oklahoma Heads To Florida With One Huge Offensive Mystery

Oklahoma heads to Gainesville for a matchup with No. 25 Florida that carries a little extra weight for a program still trying to settle its offense. It will be the Sooners first regular-season game on Floridas campus, and it comes at a time when the staff has already made a major change by firing offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and elevating tight ends coach Jason Witten into the play-calling role.

The bigger question now is what the offense looks like under that new arrangement, especially with quarterback decisions still hanging in the air. For a team trying to find stability on the road against a ranked opponent, the Sooners are not just dealing with a new voice on the headset, but possibly a different look under center as well.
