John Calipari Validates Oklahoma's Bold Choice in Porter Moser

Oklahoma's decision to retain Porter Moser as head coach gains a vote of confidence from John Calipari, underscoring the need for administrative support in their quest for success.

In a pivotal moment for Oklahoma's basketball program, newly appointed athletic director Roger Denny has doubled down on his support for head coach Porter Moser. Just as Denny affirmed Moser's role, Arkansas head coach John Calipari, a veteran with six Final Four appearances, inadvertently validated the decision with his own high praise.

Calipari's Razorbacks narrowly edged out Moser's Sooners 82-79 in the SEC Men's Basketball Tournament quarterfinals, a game that marked the end of a remarkable six-game winning streak for Oklahoma. This loss likely kept the Sooners just shy of an NCAA Tournament berth, but it underscored a dramatic turnaround that kept Moser at the helm.

Calipari, without realizing it, echoed Denny's sentiment with a compliment that resonated: "This may be your best job, ever, of coaching," he told Moser. Moser, who previously led Loyola Chicago to the Final Four in 2018, impressed Calipari even more with his 2025-26 Sooners squad, which finished 19-15 and teetered on the edge of NCAA Tournament inclusion.

Earlier in the season, Moser's team had been struggling through a nine-game losing streak. However, a pivotal road victory against then-No. 15 Vanderbilt sparked an impressive run where the Sooners won eight of their last 11 games, putting them back in the tournament conversation.

Calipari highlighted the essence of coaching during tough times: "When you're struggling, that's real coaching. How do you keep 'em up?

How do you keep 'em believing?" Moser managed to do just that, guiding individual players to peak performances despite team challenges.

Despite missing out on the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in five years under Moser, Denny has committed to bringing him back next season. Denny acknowledged that the lack of resources, particularly in NIL opportunities, was a significant factor in the team's struggles, not Moser's coaching.

"It’s on Coach Moser to ensure our team’s performance aligns with our resources. He’s done that," Denny stated.

"But an underdog spirit will only take us so far. It’s my job to ensure that our resources match our expectations."

Denny had already decided on Moser's future before the Sooners' strong SEC Tournament performance, but Calipari's endorsement serves as a reassuring nod to both Denny and OU fans that the program is on the right track.

Calipari added, “He is one of the good guys in our profession. When you have a coach like him, the administration must do their part.

Coaches win games, but administrations win championships. They choose to invest and provide what a championship team needs.”

With Moser's proven track record and Denny's commitment to bolstering resources, the Sooners are poised to build a stronger foundation for future success.
