Isaiah Sategna gave Oklahoma exactly the kind of electric start teams dream about in a season opener.
In the No. 10 Sooners’ 51-0 win over UTEP on Friday, the wide receiver flipped the game almost immediately with an 88-yard punt return for a touchdown that helped OU jump out to a 14-0 lead in the opening minutes. Sategna said he knew the play had a chance the moment he started drifting back before fielding the first-quarter punt.
“If I back up, I always think it’s going to be a big play, big return,” Sategna said. “I already knew, ‘I’m backing up, I’m backing up.’ I was ready.”
Once he secured the ball, the lane opened fast. The former track and field star slipped through the coverage, bounced to the right side and used his sprinter speed plus strong blocking to race untouched into the end zone.
“They had some really good blocks,” Sategna said. “So I just had to weave and make a play.”
That kind of explosion wasn’t new to Oklahoma fans. In 2025, Sategna led the Sooners with 965 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on 67 catches, and he was a steady presence on special teams as well, returning 24 punts for 318 yards. The one thing he hadn’t done was take one all the way back.
That changed Friday.
“I was expecting myself to make that play,” Sategna said. “Last year I had a lot of big opportunities that I feel like I missed, even with some 35, 40-yard returns that could have been to the crib. I was finally happy to get another one in the crib.”
He had another shot later in the game, weaving past a handful of UTEP defenders on a third-quarter punt before being brought down after a 27-yard return. Sategna admitted he would have liked to finish that one too, but he wasn’t about to dwell on it.
“I definitely feel like I could’ve cribbed that one, but I was just happy with the overall performance,” Sategna said. “I’m not going to be too hard on myself, but I definitely feel like I could’ve cribbed that one.”
Sategna’s day wasn’t limited to special teams. He also caught four passes for 76 yards and a touchdown, including a 34-yard scoring strike from quarterback John Mateer. On the play, Sategna separated quickly from the defensive back and walked into the end zone.
By the end of the night, he had piled up 115 return yards, 76 receiving yards and two total touchdowns - a strong opening statement for 2026.
“It felt really good to just reap the benefits of all the work that we put in this offseason,” Sategna said.
Oklahoma’s next test comes against No. 16 Michigan in Ann Arbor on Sept. 12, and Mateer believes Sategna’s role will keep growing as the season goes on. The wideout was a lifeline for the Sooners late in 2025, and the early signs suggest he’ll keep being a central piece for OU this fall.

UTEPs season opener in Norman turned into a long afternoon almost immediately, with the Miners falling behind early and never finding a way to make Oklahoma uncomfortable in a 51-0 loss to the No. 10 Sooners.
