The Lions’ linebacker picture took another hit Tuesday, with Malcolm Rodriguez leaving practice early to be evaluated for an ankle injury during the team’s second padded session of training camp.
Rodriguez is supposed to be part of the fight for the third linebacker job in Kelvin Sheppard’s base 4-3 look, but now his status is suddenly worth watching. The team has not officially reported how serious the injury is.
For Rodriguez, this comes after a career in Detroit that has already had plenty of twists. The Lions picked him in the sixth round in 2022, and he won a starting job as a rookie when Sheppard was still coaching the position. He turned in a solid first year, but the roster around him shifted quickly after that.
Detroit used a first-round pick on Jack Campbell the following offseason, and Derrick Barnes also grew into a dependable piece in the defense. That pushed Rodriguez down the depth chart behind Campbell, Barnes and veteran Alex Anzalone.
His role expanded again in 2024 when injuries hit Barnes and Anzalone, both of whom landed on injured reserve. Then Rodriguez’s own season was cut short by a torn ACL on Thanksgiving.
That injury carried over into the start of the 2025 season, and Rodriguez did not get into a game until Week 12 against the New York Giants. Even with the stop-and-start nature of his time in Detroit, he has put together a career line of 163 combined tackles, three sacks and 11 tackles for loss. He also picked off a pass in the Lions’ NFC Championship loss to the San Francisco 49ers in 2023.
Detroit brought him back this offseason on a one-year deal after his rookie contract expired, and he was set to compete for the third spot alongside Campbell, who was an All-Pro in 2025, and Barnes.
The Lions have already been dealing with linebacker attrition in camp. Rookie Jimmy Rolder is out for a stretch with a hamstring injury, and Detroit answered by signing veteran Devin White to help round out the room.
White now looms as another challenger for Rodriguez’s job. He brings a strong résumé, including a career-best tackle total last season with the Las Vegas Raiders and a Second Team All-Pro nod earlier in his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Detroit’s injury list doesn’t stop there. Derrick Moore, Anthony Firkser and Sione Vaki are also dealing with injuries.
